You’re a savvy fantasy footballer, or at least like to think you are. You subscribe to sites like Fantasy Football Mastermind to gather the best intel, and chuckle at the guys who bring a 2-month-old magazine to your in-person draft. You’ve studied every detail, from last year’s usage rates to 40 yard dash times, hand size of receivers, minicamp rumors, GPS tracking data… no detail is too small. You try to root out every hint of randomness and ensure predictability. But then there are kickers and defenses, where chaos reigns, randomness is the rule of the day, and the margin between cellar and the middling is small, and between the middling and elite is even smaller. Kickers and defenses remind us that the universe is cruel, and football is played with an oblong ball, which bounces in unpredictable directions.
