As one source put it on Friday night, Smith wanted $40 million per year, and the Seahawks believed they could replace him for $30 million. So, they pivoted and traded Smith to the Raiders in order to try to save $10 million per season in a new deal. That is assuming QB Sam Darnold is willing to accept $30 million per season in a new deal. Remember, the Giants paid QB Daniel Jones $40 million per season in a deal in 2019. It seems the Seahawks are trying to "take the cheap route" with regard to both the quarterback position and the wide receiver position, since they don't want to pay WR D.K. Metcalf what he wants either.
