Houston Texans July Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
7/27/2018

QB Deshaun Watson is running all drills as camp opens. So far no lingering injury concerns. Sure do need a better back-up than what they have. After Watson the talent in the QB room is thin.

The Texans have the cap cash if an OT cap casualty becomes available. I was hoping that T Jason Peters and his $10 million cap hit would make him available. Looks like the Eagles are going to hold on to him. Going to camp it looks like G Zach Fulton and C Nick Martin are vying for the starting OC position. LT Julie’n Davenport and RT Seantrel Henderson are the team’s best Ts. G Senio Kelemete, C-G Kyle Fuller and C-G Greg Mancz are veterans that will compete for playing time. Third round draft pick OT Martinas Rankin, recovering from foot surgery due to a broken foot suffered in OTAs starts camp on the PUP list. This is a concern position.

One of the more interesting camp battles centers around the TE. No, there is no one here that you want on your fantasy team in September but this will be a fun position to watch in August. Born in Jamaica, basketball forward now rookie TE Jevoni Robinson posts a mid-4.5 40 to go with a 6’8" 241-lb physique. Is he a football player? Well, he looks like it. Also in the mix is this year’s third round draft selection TE Jordon Akins. An offensive weapon only, he’s another big fast guy that should be fun to watch in the pre-season. TE Stephen Anderson in his third year is athletic but can’t block and seems to get lost in the red zone. He may lose his job to Adkins. Sixth round choice TE Jordon Thomas, 6-6, 265, is a project and will need to learn to block. He played a lot of WR last year, he can catch the ball. Should be fun to watch in camp.

RB Lamar Miller is the starter but he’s starting to look like a JAG. RB D’onta Foreman ruptured the Achilles tendon of his left foot late last year and will start camp on the PUP list. Can rookie FA RB Terry Swanson or someone else surprise this year? Swanson was a priority signing after the Draft. A rookie will have an opportunity.

The coaches want rookie WR Keke Coutee to fit in at the slot with WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Will Fuller catching the long balls. Coutee is clearly a football player with blazing speed. The Texans have been trying to fill that spot for a while. WR Bruce Ellington did well there last year until he was injured. Can Coutee stay healthy?

Looks to me that S Tyrann Mathieu is a projected starter with rookie FS Justin Reid competing with the veteran CB Kareem Jackson for the other safety position. CB Aaron Colvin and CB Kevin Johnson will both be vying for starting jobs. DE Jadeveon Clowney limped during OTAs. The team doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to re-do his contract. DE J.J. Watt so far has no restrictions in camp.

This team is not loaded with talent. With 31 million in cap space to burn expect them to make some pick-ups this summer.

End.
