Los Angeles Chargers June Scouting Report
Brad Willis
6/28/2018
Not a lot of recent movement in Chargersville. DE Melvin Ingram is predicting a Super Bowl win for the Chargers. While I wouldn’t be shocked if they win the AFC West, I would be shocked if they made it even deep into the playoffs. Still, they have a shot at being a pretty good team, if only they can stay healthy. Let’s take a look at the team by position.
QB: Chargers QB Philip Rivers remains your starter and looks poised for another very strong fantasy season. Rivers is a durable and accurate quarterback on a pass-first team. Likely a Top 10 fantasy option this year.
RB: Once again, if he can stay healthy, RB Melvin Gordon is expected to handle the lion’s share of the work at the running back position. While the Chargers’ yards-per-carry average is poor, Gordon should see plenty of scoring opportunities, making him one of the top fantasy options.
WR: When healthy, WR Keenan Allen is perhaps one of the better wideouts in the league. However, Allen does not have a history of durability, so if you select him, keep this in mind. WR Tyrell Williams remains somewhat underrated and might be worth a late draft pick. His value goes up in the event of injury. This could be a breakout year for WR Mike Williams. Watch and learn. WR Travis Benjamin is either red hot or colder than ice. Personally, I’m looking for more consistency.
TE: Now that TE Hunter Henry is lost for the season, the Chargers do not have a good option at tight end. They have not signed future Hall of Fame TE Antonio Gates and their best option might be TE Virgil Green. Cannot recommend drafting a Chargers tight end at this time, and I haven’t written that in a long time.
PK: The presumed starter is PK Caleb Sturgis. He could be quite good but was injured most of last season. Wouldn’t be my first choice.
DEF: I expect the Chargers defense to be quite good. Start with 2 of the better ends in the league with DE Melvin Ingram and DE Joey Bosy. Rookie S Derwin James should make an early impact. LB Denzel Perryman is outstanding and probably underrated. CB Jason Verrett is one of the League’s better corners, albeit with a history of injury and fragility. But generally, I’d expect this defense to do some good things.
End.
