Houston Texans June Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
6/28/2018

QB Deshaun Watson will be starting at QB this year. Great news for those of us counting on him this year. The real question is can he stay heathy. Not much talent in the QB room after Deshaun.

OG Zach Fulton has taken the leadership role with this re-building OL. In OTA he’s actually playing center as C Nick Martin recovers from ankle surgery. Martin was mostly ineffective last year due to a bad wheel. Based on OTA it looks like LT Julie’n Davenport and RT Seantrel Henderson are the team’s best hopes at T. G Senio Kelemete, C-G Kyle Fuller and C-G Greg Mancz are veterans that will compete for playing time. Third round draft pick OT Martinas Rankin had a way to go before he suffered a broken foot injury. The Texans have the cap cash if someone becomes available.

RB Lamar Miller is the starter here but he will not dominate. RB D’onta Foreman ruptured the Achilles tendon of his left foot late last year; his availability for the start of the season is 50-50. Enter rookie FA RB Terry Swanson. He was a priority signing after the Draft. The 5-9, 209-pound 4.51 runner scored 14 TDs last year. Can he contribute? He will have an opportunity.

The news from OTA is that rookie WR Keke Coutee is a fit with WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Will Fuller. He’s clearly a football player with blazing speed in the slot. The Texans have been trying to fill that spot for a while. WR Bruce Ellington did well there last year until he was injured. Can Coutee stay healthy?

Looks to me that S Tyrann Mathieu is a projected starter with rookie FS Justin Reid competing with the veteran CB Kareem Jackson for the other Safety position. CB Aaron Colvin I believe will take Kareem’s position at starting CB. DE Jadeveon Clowney limped around during OTAs. Not a good sign for a guy who had arthroscopic knee cleaning four months ago. All news concerning DE J.J. Watt so far has been positive.

The Texans have 31 million in cap space. This team is not loaded with talent. Can they make the most out of what they have?

End.
