Seattle Seahawks May Scouting Report
Rick Watts
5/25/2018
Seattle came into the draft with these picks (round-count):
1-1
2-0
3-0
4-1
5-4
6-0
7-2
After their trades (which did not include FS Earl Thomas) they ended up with:
1-1
2-0
3-1
4-1
5-4
6-1
7-1
So they really only gained one pick overall, but what they did made this draft really exciting. I fully expected them to trade out of round 1 and pick up maybe 2 fours somehow or at least a four and a five. With the top two mid round picks I expected them to take a running back and a safety. Then to grab a corner in the 5th who would contribute, maybe a punter late and the rest was fodder. But here is what really happened.
Round 1
Welcome to Seattle RB Rashaad Penny. Get ready for those jerseys to go on sale. The media instantly graded this pick poorly based on it being a reach. But I suspect Penny would still have gone by the end of the first if Seattle had not taken him. Do not worry about the media, just watch the dang game. This dude has game and Seattle has had years of pain and injury at this position. He will also contribute on special teams taking some pressure off WR Tyler Lockett. I am really excited to see this guy come to town and hit someone.
Round 3
The two things to know about DE Rasheem Green are that he is likely going to start on the end or at least as a nickle rusher and that he is going to get bigger and better. He is a 20 year old guy with huge upside. So we got both Green and Penny for the value of that original first round pick. And the national media is on him as too small and likely to get injured before he makes a name. Welcome to Seattle where we win with the pedestrian and unlikely to start guys. Seattle’s running game and defensive front seven are going to be beastly. And the secondary may not be the LOB, but they will be very good.
Round 4 -
Remember that commitment to the run? TE Will Dissly is here to pave some lanes. And hopefully help keep QB Russell Wilson from having to show how great he is at running for his life all the time. Another round of fire from the national media saying a blocking tight end could have been taken later. Maybe. But Seattle wanted Dissly and got him. I am already picturing a set with him and TE Nick Vannett both in the game. Seattle will be smash mouth football again for sure.
Round 5
Seattle likes players with heart and attitude. The Seahawks are family. Maybe never so much as now that they have drafted LB Shaquem Griffin to play with his twin brother CB Shaquill Griffin. There are all sorts of Hallmark movie storylines here, but this is football. The new Griffin looks to fill in at weak side linebacker but he may be too small to play there. He will absolutely contribute on special teams. Coach Carroll says he wants to put him in a position to run and hit. Well that sounds like a SS Kam Chancellor role to me. Let’s see if he can come in and take a shot at that long term.
Next up is CB Tre Flowers who was picked primarily because he is super fast. 4.43 40 fast. Seattle will play him as a big fast corner but he was a safety in college. Big fast 5th round corners can work out pretty well in Seattle, just sayin.
And you hear that national media scorn again as Seattle nabs the best punter in the draft Michael Dickson. Punter Jon Ryan is as Seahawk as they get, but his game has fallen the past couple of years. There were times a few years back when Seattle was horrible, but Ryan’s leg kept them in the game. Dickson looks like he can be that guy for Seattle for the next decade. How is that not worth a 5th?
The last pick for Seattle in the fifth was OL Jamarco Jones. He seems like a ‘tweener’ guy between tackle and guard. He has the wrong size and did not show well in the Combine. But looking at just what he did on the field makes this look like a steal. If he was sized like a typical guard or tackle and had performed at the Combine like he did on the field, he would have gone on the second day. With our line being what it is, Jones should get a shot to show exactly what he can do in the NFL. Seattle will start him out at left tackle backing up LT Duane Brown.
Round 6
DE Jake Martin looked more like a 3-4 guy but he has that Edge skill that Seattle will find a way to get him showing. Could he be a Leo? He is another guy who I think will make the team and contribute. And he came as part of the move down in the first round as well. This draft looks so much better than I thought it was going to be.
Round 7
The last pick of the Seahawks for the weekend was QB Alex McGough. He has shown well so far and may also make the team as the backup we hope never has to start. It seems like every guy here has a legitimate shot at the final 63. That seems like a good draft to me.
End.
