Houston Texans May Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
5/25/2018

Believe it or not QB Deshaun Watson is participating in OTAs this week! This is great news considering that he’s rehabilitating his knee.

Based on last month’s draft it looks like LT Julie’n Davenport might be the team’s best hope at LT. I don’t think the second year vet is ready. The hope here is that someone like LT Jason Peters would become a cap casualty in June. The Texans certainly have the cap cash if someone becomes available. The OL will be re-assembled in camp. G Senio Kelemete, G Zach Fulton, T Seantrel Henderson, C Nick Martin, C-G Kyle Fuller and C-G Greg Mancz are veterans that will compete. Third round draft pick OT Martinas Rankin will try to win a job at RT.

RB Lamar Miller and RB D’onta Foreman return but neither will dominate. The Texans need to get lucky with undrafted FA RB Lavon Coleman out of Washington. He has vision to run between the tackles and probably is a better receiver and blocker than a runner. Can he learn to run better? He will have an opportunity.

Clearly WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Will Fuller are starters here but the big news is that the team drafted three TEs and a slot receiver. Rookie WR Keke Coutee will compete with veterans WR Bruce Ellington and WR Braxton Miller at the slot. Look for Miller to be cut and whoever can stay healthy become the starter.

Rookie FS Justin Reid will join FAs S Tyrann Mathieu and CB Aaron Colvin to shore up last year’s leaky secondary. DE Jadeveon Clowney is taking it easy during OTAs as he recovers from an arthroscopic knee cleaning. All news concerning DE J.J. Watt so far has been positive.

The Texans will go into the second stage of free agency in June with 31 million in cap space. Fun time of the year for people like us.

End.
