Green Bay Packers May Scouting Report
Mike Hankes
5/5/2018

This is the post draft report. This year I will review the draft picks, provide a brief review of last year’s draft class, and look at the undrafted free agents. The Packers traded down and then back up in the first round – so those who predicted such things were both right. In the process they picked up a first rounder for 2019. So they went in this year with 12 picks and come away with 11 selections – there was a lot of trading to arrive at that. From my personal Packer draft report five players were selected. 5 of this year’s picks were defensive players, 4 were offensive players, and 2 were special team players. Here is the breakdown:

Round 1, Pick 18 overall – CB Jaire Alexander, 5-10, 190, Louisville

Alexander has played corner back and slot corner in college. He is a cover corner. He brings speed, athleticism, ball skills, and versatility to the team. Last year opponents shredded the Packer secondary. He is part of the upgrade although I wished he could be taller. Other significant additions include the re-signed free agent CB Davon House, and former Packer CB Tramon Williams. There is a definite remake of the position going on.

Round 2, Pick 45 overall – CB Josh Jackson, 6-0, 192, Iowa

Jackson is a one year CB starter at Iowa but he led Division I with 8 interceptions. He is a physical press corner and was thought to be a round one talent. Along with the other help, Jackson is part of the remake.

Round 3, Pick 88 overall – LB Owen Burk, 6-3, 233, Vanderbilt

He has experience at safety, but made the switch to inside linebacker. He hits hard, can cover, and is fast. He can put himself in position to start and call the defense. He is a different ILB than the others on their roster.

Round 4, Pick 133 overall – WR J’mon Moore, 6-3, 205, Missouri

Missouri receivers don’t seem to work out well in the NFL – there is always a first time. He has speed and was productive in college. But in the pros he will need to get stronger to compete in traffic and get off press coverage. Hopefully it works out.

Round 5, Pick 138 overall – OG Cole Madison, 6-5, 315, Washington State

One of the best offensive line prospects in the draft – certainly in the PAC-10. Played tackle in college, but projects to guard in the pros. It could be they give him a shot at right tackle. Packer offensive line coach has had less to work with.

Round 5, Pick 172 overall – P JK Scott, 6-5, 208, Alabama

Simply put, he is considered one of the best punters in this draft. He is suppose to be good at directional punting. I didn’t know they were in the market for a punter – so this pick caught me by surprise.

Round 5, Pick 174 overall – WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, 6-4, 206, South Florida

This guy is a size-speed combo with a one year track record. Call him a step up from former Packer WR Jeff Janis.

Round 6, Pick 207 overall – WR Equanimeous St. Brown, 6-5, 214, Notre Dame

This guy is not only a size-speed combo guy, but he is smart as well. He played well when he had QB DeShone Kizer throwing to him at Notre Dame. Hopefully he learns fast in Green Bay.

Round 7, Pick 232 overall – DE James Looney, 6-2, 287, California

He is a tenacious player but I don’t know if that translates to the pros. We will see ……….

Round 7, Pick 239 overall – LS Hunter Bradley, 6-2, 241, Mississippi State

Simply put, again, he is considered the best long snapper in this draft. I wouldn’t know because I don’t scout long snappers. And it has been a while since I have seen one drafted.

Round 7, Pick 248 overall – OLB Kendall Donnerson, 6-3, 249, Southeast Missouri State

Like one analyst said, "if you have size and speed you are going to get drafted". But this guy is so raw he makes uncooked beef look like a finished product. We will see ………..

Last year’s draft could produce some benefits this year. CB Kevin King stands to be one of the starting corners. S Josh Jones will probably be the S Morgan Burnette replacement. Both LB Vice Biegle and DT Montravius Adams both say they are healthy and will make an impact this year. Truthfully both ended last season well on the field. RB Aaron Jones and RB Jamaal Williams both showed they could play well last year. The jury is out on RB Devante Mays, WR DeAngelo Yancey, and OT Kofi Amichia. That is 4 possible starters, 2 contributors, and 3 we don’t know about yet – not bad.

As for undrafted free agents, the Packers signed 14 of them. They are; QB Tim Boyle, TE Kevin Radar, OG Jacob Alsadek, OT Alex Light, OT Kyle Meadows, OC Austin Davis, DL Tyler Lancaster, DL Filipo Mokofisi, DE Conor Sheehy, ILB C.J. Johnson, ILB Marcus Porter, OLB Naashon Hughes, LB Paris Bennett, and S Raven Greene. The ones to watch are Alsadek, Davis, Sheehy, and Lancaster.

As usual, the Packers could use some health to give their team a better chance to win. In the next report we will see how OTAs and minicamps are going. We also have new coaches – so hopefully that helps too. I hope you have and wear your "I Survived the Draft" shirt.

End.
