Los Angeles Chargers April Scouting Report
Brad Willis
4/25/2018

While the L.A. Chargers improved as the 2017 season wore on, it’s clear that they continue to need help in some areas. Let’s take a look at their needs with an eye on this weekend’s draft.

QB: Chargers QB Philip Rivers is still playing at a high level, but I’m guessing he has 2-4 seasons left before retirement. I believe that the team will focus on the quarterback position and that they will grab one before most people assume that they will. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them reach a bit to get someone that they like. It usually takes a few years to blossom into a quality starting quarterback, and there’s no doubt that a youngster would benefit from the tutelage of an experienced mentor like Rivers. The future is now.

RB: L.A. RB Melvin Gordon is a quality running back, but the Chargers can use some depth at the position. Drafting a back-up to Gordon will be a moderate priority for the Bolts.

WR: I actually think the Chargers are in pretty good shape at the wideout position. WR Keenan Allen is potentially fragile but is outstanding when healthy. Expect to see more, and maybe a lot more, of promising WR Mike Williams. Underrated WR Tyrell Williams has signed a restricted free agent tender, which I believe to be a smart move. WR Travis Benjamin is hot or ice cold but is a speedster who adds value to the team. I don’t believe they’ll spend much time here, although an addition is always possible in the later rounds.

TE: Chargers TE Hunter Henry has the potential to be one of the better players at his position. The Chargers have had no recent contact with future Hall of Famer TE Antonio Gates. While I like Gates as a player and as a man, I suspect that, at nearly 38 years of age, his days with the Chargers may be over, unfortunately. Time will tell. This is not an area of strong need for the Bolts, although as with wide receiver, if the right player is still available in later rounds, they might snag him.

PK: If he can remain healthy, the job is basically PK Caleb Sturgis’ to lose. This is not an area of priority for the Chargers.

DEF: In 2017, the Chargers were ranked 2nd to last against the run. That has to change. Look for higher round selections at linebacker, defensive line and safety.

End.
