Seattle Seahawks April Scouting Report
Rick Watts
4/24/2018

Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider will not surprise anyone on day one unless he actually makes a pick at number 18. The more likely scenario is that he trades back once or twice in order to get 2 or more 3rd rounders. No matter what Seattle has lost a ton of talent and will need to rely on his unproven draft picks from the last few years to make a difference.

QB-

LT Duane Brown and C Justin Britt are solid starters and the rest of the line will shake out. No names will be drafted for this offensive line.

QB Russell Wilson should get another backup besides QB Austin Davis. But it really does not matter. If Russell goes down the season is over. There can be no backup.

RB-

RB Chris Carson or RB Mike Davis could end up a starter if healthy. RB CJ Prosise perhaps has become too injured to play. Assuming they trade down, a 3rd round pick should go for running back. There would not be a running back at 18 that would be worth a shot.

WR-

WR Doug Baldwin and WR Tyler Lockett are the starters here with depth from WR Marcus Johnson coming from a trade. Nothing much will happen on draft day in this area. Late picks who have a small chance to make the team, perhaps.

TE-

Another late rounder as tight end who also has a shot at contributing on special teams could happen here.

K-

Oh look. A Raider. PK Sebastian Janikowski was on IR all of last year, but presumably is the answer to Seattle’s kicking question. The wait is still on regarding P Jon Ryan and whether or not he will get a shot at improving last year’s performance. Perhaps a late round punter could be taken in the draft to challenge him?

D-

Lots of change on the defense and a loss of talent with names the media knows. SS Kam Chancellor may or may not recover from his injury. FS Earl Thomas may be traded for picks. Either way there will be a new Legion of Boom created from the new guys. Again assuming a trade down for multiple thirds, I suspect a third rounder will be at safety to challenge as a starter.

LB Bobby Wagner and LB KJ Wright are strong starters in the linebacker spots and others on the roster will compete to start with them. No draft choices here.

So many questions on the D-Line, but I don’t see it as dire as many others seem to. There is youth and depth here despite it not showing much last year. Any additions in the draft will be late and may not stick.

We will soon find out what happens with Seattle’s gutted draft. They are left with the 18th pick of round 1, 20th pick of round 4, four 5th rounders and two 7th rounders. I just don’t see a player at 18 worth the risk as being the only guy who can bring an impact over the first two days. Seattle should find a way to trade down and have 2 thirds which go for running back and safety. Then hope for something with the fourth rounder (maybe a corner) and the rest will struggle to make the team. This will be a bleak weekend for Seattle and a hard one for the GM to pull off neatly. If only we had that extra 4th for Jimmy Graham that we let walk away for nothing.

End.
