Houston Texans April Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
4/12/2018

We know who QB Deshaun Watson is but who is QB Joe Webb? He’s a 6’4", 220 pound, 31 year old FA signee that has won as QB in the NFL; apparently he’s Watson’s big brother designee. This one will be fun to watch in camp. The team loves QB Lamar Jackson but he’s probably not coming. It’s hard to get excited about the return of FA QB Brandon Weeden. He knows the O and has always played well for the Texans but I had my heart set on Jackson in the QB room. We’ll see.

Will LT Julie’n Davenport start? I don’t think the second year vet who finished there last season is ready. Ready or not he may be the starter. Where is LT Jason Peters when you need him? Will he be a cap casualty in Philly? The Texans certainly have the cap cash if he becomes available. The Texans signed FAs G Senio Kelemete, G Zach Fulton and T Seantrel Henderson. C Nick Martin, C-G Kyle Fuller and C-G Greg Mancz are the young guys returning who hope to make a contribution. RT Derek Newton has been cut due to medical reasons. Between the FAs and the young returning linemen is there enough talent to remake the OL? They need to draft a LT but their first pick in April is in the third round. Even if the Texans wanted to trade up they wouldn’t have enough for both a QB and LT. If they don’t find someone good to come in look for Davenport to play LT. LT is the key and RT is a big concern.

RB Lamar Miller and RB D’onta Foreman return but neither is an alpha back. Foreman is recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture so all bets are off with him. The Texans have three picks in the third round of next month’s college draft. They need to get lucky like New Orleans did last year with RB Alvin Kamara. New Orleans was smart as well as lucky.

Did the Texans develop another playmaker last year in WR Will Fuller? Sure looked like it when Watson was playing. Clearly WR DeAndre Hopkins is their one but Fuller played like a one there for four straight games until Watson went down. Top TE C.J. Fiedorowicz has retired because of concussion concerns. Enter FA blocking TE Matt Lengel. The draft is deep with talented tight ends. Will Oklahoma’s TE Mark Andrews be there in the third or fourth round?

The D was decimated by injuries last year. Enter FAs S Tyrann Mathieu and CB Aaron Colvin to shore up that leaky secondary. The Texans are looking for more secondary help. You can be sure that they will draft another CB. DE Jadeveon Clowney is fun to watch but will DE J.J. Watt return to form? Close?

Recognizing the teams’ perennial putrid ST efforts CB Johnson Bademosi. ILB Josh Keyes and QB Joe Webb were FA signings because of their standout performances. More help is needed.

The Texans will go into the second stage of free agency after the Draft with 31 million in cap space. Fun time of the year for people like us.

End.
