Seattle Seahawks March Scouting Report
Rick Watts
3/26/2018

Seattle has now wrapped up the #2, #3, #6, #11 picks from the first round of the NFL Draft. The 2013 NFL Draft. OG Luke Joeckel, DE Dion Jordan, DE Barkevious Mingo and OG D. J. Fluker all went before DE Sheldon Richardson (who is no longer a ‘Hawk) that year and long before Seattle made their first pick at #62 - RB Christine Michael. RB Eddie Lacy was pick #61 that year too. Imagine if Seattle had gotten him instead of Michael. So what does that mean for Seattle? Maybe they have not lost as much as people think? Or can nothing make this offseason feel positive so this is just clever spin. Time will tell.

QB-

Joeckel is already starting at guard and now Fluker has a good shot at it too. They are not the best at pass blocking but could be serious road pavers for the running game - assuming Seattle has one. LT Duane Brown and C Justin Britt are solid and RT Germain Ifedi can learn a lot from the sudden onslaught of talent. But will talent play? I would take 5 Britts over these first rounders any day.

I still think QB Russell Wilson is a risk for fantasy leagues. He has had poor blocking for years now and all so he could have TE Jimmy Graham drop his passes. Seattle will not want to rely on Wilson’s arm or legs to win games. They are tooling up to have other options. If they do, then Wilson picks people apart while they have to respect the newfound running game. If they do not (more likely) then Wilson will continue to find a way. And that way always brings fantasy points.

RB-

RB Chris Carson won the job before going down to injury last year in game 4. He may be back? RB Mike Davis had some decent moves in his 6 games. RB CJ Prosise has obvious talent, but injuries have taken him away. When Seattle picks in round one, there will be no one around worth Seattle’s pick, but they could trade down (like they almost always do) and target RB Ronald Jones from USC who could make a big difference here.

WR-

This position is all about WR Doug Baldwin as the #1. WR Paul Richardson is gone now with WR Marcus Johnson coming in to try to replace his speed. He won’t. WR Tyler Lockett is the solid #2 now, but is a risky WR3 week to week. Not much change should happen through the rest of free agency or draft. Just more special teamers.

TE-

Finally TE Jimmy Graham is gone. But so is TE Luke Willson. So everyone left, including the new FA TE Ed Dickson is all about blocking. Seattle should bring in a late round tight end or two who also have a shot at contributing on special teams. But there will not be a fantasy starter here any time soon.

K-

Will PK Jason Myers actually be our kicker next year? Maybe a late rounder here too? And P Jon Ryan is an all around great guy and a classic ‘Hawk, but his days may be numbered too after a down year last year.

D-

Seattle waited a long time to have a nameable defense. Several years it seemed like it would happen, but then the defense would crumble. In the Pete Carroll era the secondary is a focus and brought the Legion of Boom. The Boom is SS Kam Chancellor, but his injury may keep him off the field. CB Richard Sherman takes his contract and achilles repair to the 49ers. He will not be fun to face twice every year even if he is on one leg. The young guys have to step in beside FS Earl Thomas, who remains a ‘Hawk so far and is at the top of his game at this point, to prove they should keep the LOB name. The secondary may turn out ok, but it will be very different without Sherm shutting down one side.

LB Bobby Wagner and LB KJ Wright are joined by former first round pick Mingo. Mingo’s career tackles since 2013 are about what Bobby nailed down last season. So there is a drop off, but that is ok. Seattle can use one of their 3 5th rounders here and get an upgrade.

Will we see last year’s #1 pick DT Malik McDowell? Seattle seems to think that their current supply of bodies on the defensive line is deep enough. I agreed with them at the start of last season, but that did not seem to be the case as the year went on. Jordan showed signs of his first round talent in the few games he played last year. There are several other names here you only know if you are a Seahawks fan and really they can play and could hold strong for the season. But are they one of the top defenses in the fantasy draft? Probably not, but with all the negative press they are getting they may be a sleeper pick in some fantasy drafts.

And soon we will find out what happens with Seattle’s gutted draft. They are left with the 18th pick of round 1, 20th pick of round 4, three 5th rounders and three 7th rounders. Their only pick of the first 2 days needs to have an impact or be traded down for some better chances at finding the right player. The rest will only add depth if they can make the team and that is still surprisingly hard to do. You know if we had traded Graham we would have had another 4th round pick. Instead we let him drop a bunch more passes and let him walk away for nothing.

End.
