Arizona Cardinals February Scouting Report
David Vohs
2/28/2018

The Arizona Cardinals are in a major transition mode. The Arizona Cardinals had Coach Bruce Arians retire and lost QB Carson Palmer to retirement as well. So the Cardinals worked their coaching search magic and found Coach Steve Wilks from the Carolina Panthers. Coach Mike McCoy is the offensive coordinator and Coach Al Holcomb is the defensive coach and Coach Jeff Rodgers is the special teams coordinator. Coach Steve Wilks also kept Coach Byron Leftwich, WR Coach Kevin Garver, LB coach Larry Foote, Assistant Offensive line coach Steve Heiden and strength and conditioning coach Buddy Morris as well as Terry Allen for running backs assistant. Offensive line coach is Ray Brown who played 20 seasons in the NFL including 3 with the Cardinals. Many more coaches were announced. Ben Burress who was an offensive assistant for the Panthers was named assistant to the head coach.

More good news for the Cardinals is WR Larry Fitzgerald will be back for his 15th year in the league. As a fan, I cannot wait to watch Larry for his 15th year in the league.

Let’s run through the positions as they stand.

QB: The Arizona Cardinals currently have 0 quarterbacks on their roster. QB Carson Palmer retired. QB Drew Stanton is a Free Agent, and QB Blaine Gabbert is a FA and is NOT the answer for the Arizona Cardinals. My hope is they bring in a veteran NOT named QB Josh McCown and then draft a QB in the first two rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft. We’ll get into that in March.

RB: RB David Johnson should be back in full force this year and they will lean on him mightily. I wouldn’t mind seeing RB Adrian Peterson stay on the roster at a reasonable salary but I’m guessing the Cardinals will move on and let some of their younger guys back up Johnson. I’d like to see the Cardinals grab a young RB in the later rounds as well.

WR: WR Larry Fitzgerald needs better receivers around him. Period. Through the draft or free agency, get him help. Draft prospects to be discussed next month, but right now a lot of mock drafts and WR Calvin Riddley from Alabama joining the Cardinals.

TE: ???? No clue as we don’t have much at that position right now signed.

On the defensive side, the Cardinals will look pretty much the same with some tweaks and hopefully settle in on a middle linebacking crew for this year. LB Markus Golden coming back healthy is a huge key. The Cardinals still need to really address the Cornerback across from CB Patrick Peterson (P2). I would love to see the Cardinals get the top rated CB in the draft fall to #15 and then spend the rest of the draft looking at offense. I doubt that will happen, but who knows.

The Cardinals also could use a good run stopping interior defensive lineman to plug up the middle. Get a couple big bodies in there please!

The NFL Combine starts this Friday and I cannot wait to see how that goes and who impresses.

The Cardinals also need to address their offensive line. They have basically one starter coming back from injury and have question marks at every other position. OL DJ Humphries is returning and that’s about it. The offensive line needs HELP!

The Cardinals are a huge work in progress. General Manager Steve Keim has a huge job ahead of him. The adventure starts now…….

End.
