Los Angeles Chargers Early August Scouting Report

Note: There was a delay in receiving this report, but we wanted to release it anyway for your viewing pleasure...

The Chargers open training camp in Costa Mesa on Sunday, July 30, 2017. There’s really not much new news since the last update, so here’s a recap of the current state of the 2017 Los Angeles (yuck) Chargers.

QB: Chargers QB Philip Rivers appears poised to have another very good season. True, he’ll be playing in a new city and in a tiny soccer stadium, but Rivers is a pro and should still have plenty of gas in the tank. Rivers has a solid variety of receiving options and has proven himself to be a durable quarterback who improves as the season progresses. Consider Rivers a respectable QB1 or a very strong QB2.

RB: It looks likely that RB Melvin Gordon will be one of the NFL’s better fantasy rushing options. Don’t be surprised if RB Branden Oliver takes over a lot of the 3rd down role previously filled by former Bolt RB Danny Woodhead. RB Kenjon Barner is a sleeper, but his opportunities may be limited if Gordon stays healthy.

WR: When healthy, WR Keenan Allen can be one of the best in the league, but he has not proven to be a durable option. Take that into account if you draft him. Look for the possibility of a breakout season for WR Travis Benjamin, but don’t chase him. Rookie WR Mike Williams has huge potential, but is raw and has experienced pre-season back problems. But the Chargers aren’t paying him all of that money to sit on the bench. WR Tyrell Williams and WR Dontrelle Inman are quality receivers, but they may have to fight for looks behind the aforementioned receivers.

TE: I’d still expect to see TE Antonio Gates getting most of the looks, but TE Hunter Henry represents the future of the franchise at that position and his role will increase as time goes forward. For now, both are TE2s, but watch and learn.

PK: There’s a bit of a battle between Korean born PK Younghoe Koo and PK Josh Lambo. I assume that Lambo will win the job, but there is an opportunity for Koo to potentially beat him out.

DEF: USA Today recently named the Chargers defensive line #1 in the NFL. While that sounds great on paper, they’re going to have to earn it. DE Joey Bosa is game changer and DE Melvin Ingram brings quick moves and speed to the opposite side of the line. It appears probable that the Chargers will have the best pass rush in some time. If the slightly built CB Jason Verrett stays healthy, he could be one of the better corners in the game. But he has shown a tendency towards injury, so the jury is still out, healthwise.

End.
