New York Giants Early August Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
8/15/2017

Here is a training camp update and some preliminary views after the 1st preseason game this past Friday night vs the Steelers at MetLife Stadium.

QB Eli Manning sat out the game which isn’t unusual protocol. He is on track for a big year given the offensive weapons at his disposal. He is looking super sharp in training camp thus far.

RB Paul Perkins is the defacto starter and looked ok. The run blocking wasn’t much to speak of yet so more to come I hope. RB Shane Vereen looked comfortable as the 3rd down back and should make a nice 1-2 punch in the backfield with Perkins. Rookie RB Wayne Gallman played but showed little. He will be 4th on the depth chart behind RB Orleans Darkwa who is a big special teams contributor.

WR Odell Beckham Jr also sat out as did WR Sterling Shepard who was nursing a gimpy ankle. Both guys should see action next game and I can’t wait to see them. WR Brandon Marshall is a physical presence and will be a huge asset for Eli during the regular season. The rest of the receiving corps is pretty set with WR Dwayne Harris and WR Tavarres King unless they decide to keep a 6th receiver.

Rookie 1st round pick TE Evan Engram is the real deal. He is a physical specimen that will create huge matchup problems for opposing defenses. His issue will be snap count and touches as there are a LOT of mouths to feed in the passing game! TE Rhett Ellison clearly is the solid all around performer they have been lacking the last few years.

DE Jason Pierre-Paul sat out but DE Olivier Vernon looked as good as ever. The real star is S Landon Collins who picked up where he left off. This guy is in the running for Defensive Player of the Year for sure! What a beast. The new starters on defense DT Jay Bromley and LB BJ Goodson look solid as well.

Believe it or not, a great kicking competition is shaping up with PK Aldrick Rosas vs veteran PK Mike Nugent.

That’s it for now. More to come later this month including a fantasy draft perspective.

End.
