New York Giants May Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
5/16/2017

Here is the Giants update for May after the completion of the draft and rookie mini-camp:

QB Eli Manning has a ton of weapons at his disposal for 2017 and should have a bounce back year. To protect themselves for the future, the G-Men drafted QB Davis Webb from Cal in the third round. He ran spread offenses in college so will make a perfect understudy to Eli for the next two years. He has a ton of potential but is very raw when it comes to the pro game. QB Geno Smith and QB Josh Johnson will compete for the #2 job. QB Ryan Nassib doesn’t figure into the future plans.

The runningback corps got another shot in the arm when the Giants drafted RB Wayne Gallman from Clemson in the 4th round. He is a versatile back with goal line experience. RB Paul Perkins is the anointed starter after RB Rashad Jennings was cut. RB Shane Vereen and RB Orleans Darkwa will provide competition and depth.

WR Odell Beckham Jr, WR Brandon Marshall and WR Sterling Shepard are as good of a receiving trio that exists in the NFL today. This group will give opposing defensive coordinators headaches all season long.

Big Blue has significantly upgraded this position after receiving average production from the likes of incumbent TE Will Tye. Newly acquired TE Rhett Ellison will likely be the starter as he is the most well rounded of the bunch and got a nice contract to sign with Big Blue. More importantly, the Giants drafted TE Evan Engram from Ole Miss in the first round of the draft to give Eli yet another downfield target. During minicamp, his speed and athletic ability were on display. I can’t wait to see him in action as he should present matchup nightmares all season long.

DC Steve Spagnuolo got a replacement at defensive tackle for DT Jonathan Hankins with the drafting of DT Dalvin Tomlinson from Alabama in the second round. Otherwise, this outstanding defense is essentially the same as 2016.

That’s it for now.

More to come in June….

End.
