Houston Texans April Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
4/12/2017

The Texans have not signed any FAs this year sans their holdover kickers. As of this moment QB Tom Savage and QB Brian Weeden are one and two on the depth chart. Fresh talent is needed for the QB meetings. Sportscaster Tony Romo is not coming. Will they gamble on a FA and / or draft one with their top pick in this month’s draft? Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has a better chance than QB Colin Kaepernick with this owner. QB Jay Cutler has a lesser chance than Kaepernick with the HC. Expect the Texans to be drafting QBs. That’s plural.

The best Texan O linemen include LT Duane Brown, LG Xavier Su’a-Filo, C Nick Martin, C Greg Mancz and RG Jeff Allen. As bad as the Texans need a QB don’t be surprised if they pick a RT in the first round of the Draft. Who is going to play RT for the Texans this year? Additionally, who will be the back-ups? The team has always played its best O when they had a good OL. No surprise there.

I expect the team to sign rookie FAs for RB Lamar Miller back-ups. I don’t believe the coaches are very excited about their holdover RBs. With the deep RB depth coming out of college I expect them to find a pretty good FA or two.

The Texans won’t have the luxury of drafting a WR and / or TE this year. Their best hope is that a FA who played college basketball like Kansas State’s F D.J. Johnson is available or that second year undrafted TE Stephen Anderson makes a dramatic jump in playing time. We’ll see.

The fans want to see DE Jadeveon Clowney and DE J.J. Watt on the field playing together and replacements for CB A. J. Bouye and other D role performers lost in free agency. Replacing a starting Safety is a must; they have perennially been a Safety short. Are there enough draft picks to replace the D losses and again be a top D? Clearly the answer is yes with the right coaching.

Now for the best time of the year, the 2017 NFL Draft!

End.
