Denver Broncos July Scouting Report
Charles Rives
7/6/2026

OTAs

Denver opened its divided (6/2-4; 6/9-11) OTAs on June 2nd and DC Vance Joseph had a message for his defensive players: Last year is irrelevant. NFL teams are getting better and better, and the defense has to find a way to get better than last year. IMO, that means maintain the sack rate, improve the run defense and create more turnovers.

First OTAs

Jaylen Waddle turns heads. Bo Nix is on track to return. Jonah Elliss is too good on the edge to move to LB. There will be no joint practices this year for the Broncos.

Second OTAs

Jaylen Waddle is as advertised. Young Players Showing Development: WR Pat Bryant, RB RJ Harvey, CB Jahdae Barron, RB Jonah Colemen and QB Sam Elhinger. Vance Joseph returns with a focus on improving turnovers. Veterans DL Enyi Uwazurike and edge Que Robinson are pushing to start and for more snaps, respectively. TE Evan Engram was the most active pass-catching target. UDFA Dane Key is turning heads. OLB Jonathan Cooper arrested twice. The seriousness with which DE Tyler Onyedim approaches the film room is highly encouraging. Keep an eye on WR Kolbe Katsis as a returner.

Mandatory Mini-Camp Day One

QB Bo Nix could be a full go now if the Broncos wanted him to be. Edge Jonathan Cooper was excused from mini-camp. Stand outs: FB Adam Prentice, DL Matt Henningsen, RB Jonah Colemen, WR Jalen Waddle, WR Hakeem Butler and CB Sean Fresch.

Day Two

DE Tyler Onyedim and RB Jonah Coleman already standing out. Edge rushers among the standouts. Payton canceled day three of minicamp. The Broncos are scheduled to move into their new home building that is in its final construction phases. WR Hakeem Butler, 6'5, 242 is the quintessential Sean Payton X receiver and he hit the ground running.

Off Season Recap Offense

Davis Webb will bring a "mad Scientist" perspective to Sean Payton's offense. QB Bo Nix is ready for training camp and will benefit from Webb's approach, as will TE Evan Engram and the running back room. There is Clarity in the running back room with JK Dobbins being the grinder, RJ Harvey being the passing game back and Jonah Colemen being the third back with a larger role than Tyler Badie had last season. The wide receiver Corp is deep though headed by WRs Jalen Waddle and Courtland Sutton. The remaining wide receivers will all have roles as "the third wide receiver". TE Justin Jolly will red shirt barring injury while he learns to block in space preparing to take over the F tight end in 2027. WR Jalen Waddle will be used in the deep game and the screen game, adding an explosive element to the offense that has been lacking. Using Waddle all aver the field will open up thing for the other receivers, especially, TE Evan engram who will be better utilized by Davis Webb. Webb's better utilization will also extend to the three headed monster in the running back room.

Defense

The defense is better than the sum of its parts and will need to continue to play that way. The Broncos are deep at edge and corner. Many d-linemen are is position to earn snaps and are apt at getting into the offensive backfield. The edge players are emphasizing attacking the ball and S Hufanga is hitting the jugs machine to increase turnovers. ILB Red Murdock is displaying anticipation and is always where he is supposed to be. He appears to be a lock for the 53-man roster. Old Jonah Elliss is ready to start if Cooper misses time. CB Jahdae Barron is much improved and is focused on outside corner. Riley Moss is in "play it safe mode" and sharpening his skills against Jalen Waddle. Safety depth is a concern, but Devon Key seems to be the front runner for number three safety.

Special Teams

Special Teams has a plethora of good players- safeties, corners, third pass protectors. However, the return game falls off if Marvin Mims is unavailable. Coordinator Darren Rizzi is working hard to correct that for the 2026 season. The Broncos are counting on the same high standard of performance from their Kicker and Punter.

Transactions

Signed WR Hakeem Butler. Signed CB/returner Sean Fresch Jr. Waived WR Michael Woods II and CB Paul Manning. Signed OT Reid Holskey and CB Blake Cotton. Waived OL Nash Jones. Orangeman's Take

Denver may well be a better NFL team than a fantasy producer because of the way it spreads the ball around. QB Bo Nix could throw for 4,000 with both Jalen Waddle and Courtland Sutton having a thousand yard receiving season. TE Evan Engram could also have a big year. Or the running game could be featured with JK Dobbins rushing for 1,000 yards and staying healthy. Denver's players are low ranked for fantasy and could turn into league winners if thing turn out like Broncos Country hopes. As things stand now, Nix is the quarterback and worth taking a chance on. Dobbins will have 50% of the carries and RJ Harvey 40%. Both could be impacted by Jonah Coleman who will push for snaps. Waddle and Sutton will push for 1,000 yards receiving. Evan Engram is the X factor with 500 yards and 5 TDs the hope. All the remaining WRs-Franklin, Mims, Bryant will have a role and floors of 300 yards. Franklin and Waddle attacking the middle together will be tough to defend. Bryant is the chain mover and Mims the speedy Waddle backup. If the Broncos offense can score more touchdowns, Lutz will live on PATs The goal is to be a top 10, preferably a top 5 offense. Denver's special teams should be a difference maker. And, it's all, about turnovers for the defense. With the turnover emphasis, sacks could slip but it is still a top 5 defense.

End.
