Los Angeles Chargers Late August Scouting Report
Brad Willis
8/27/2025

The Chargers have made their final cuts to get down to the 53-man roster. There were not a lot of surprises, other than perhaps at running back. The Bolts first regular season game of the year is in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday, September 5th. This report will be a preview of the upcoming games against the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil.

QB: Your obvious starter is QB Justin Herbert. While HC Jim Harbaugh likes to run the ball, Herbert’s passing ability is unmistakable, and he has top 10 fantasy potential in 2025. In most leagues, Herbert will be a QB1 this coming week. Former backup QB Taylor Heinicke was released in favor of QB Trey Lance, who outplayed Heinicke in the preseason.

RB: Good news. As of this writing, RB Najee Harris (eye-NFI) has resumed practice, so it appears that he’ll be on the field come week 1. To be candid, I’m not sure what role Harris will have versus 1st round draft pick RB Omarion Hampton. Both are worth drafting and owning, but who will be the primary featured back? Only time will tell, but for now, consider both RB2s with an advantage to Harris due to his NFL experience. Either or neither could become RB1s, but for now, I’m just not sure who will get most carries. Surprisingly, RB Rocket Sanders was released. Unsurprisingly, Sanders was immediately claimed by the Browns.

WR: The wideout to target is clearly WR Ladd McConkey who is a fantasy WR1. While WR Quentin Johnston is also listed as a starter, he’s been inconsistent, so I’d want him to show me something before I drafted him. WR Keenan Allen is getting old, but he’s probably still a WR2, but we’ll see. WR Tre’ Harris and WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith have shown flashes in preseason, but it’s a bit early to know what their role will be in the Chargers’ offense.

TE: This is a tough one. Starters shown as TE Will Dissly or TE Tyler Conklin, but the choice with the most upside is rookie TE Oronde Gadsden. Neither is worth chasing, but this is a watch and learn situation. Dissly or Gadsen are TE2s for now, with upside.

PK: The Chargers kicker is PK Cameron Dicker, and he’s very good with top 10 potential.

DEF: The Chargers’ defense has improved under DC Jesse Minter. That said, I think the KC offense is still formidable, so while I like the Bolt’s D overall, I probably wouldn’t start them this week. Good luck with your week 1 games!

End.
