Dallas Cowboys July Scouting Report
Dr. Gil Brovar
7/31/2025

There have been many positives in training camp, but the most significant positive is the change in culture initiated by Coach Brian Schottenheimer. He has brought a sense of discipline and accountability not seen since Bill Parcells coached this team nearly 20 years ago. Hopefully this will lead to fewer penalties and a greater commitment to excellence.

The contract issues still loom over this team. The did sign TEJake Ferguson to a 4 year deal, so at least in this one instance, they did not wait until the last minute to deal with this. Remaining unsigned to an extension are: DE Micah Parsons, CB Daron Bland, OG Tyler Smith, and PK Brandon Aubrey. Hopefully the Jones crime family will address these issues appropriately, but nothing seems to be imminent.

On the field, there are some noticeable positives. Firstly, QB Dak Prescott appears to be fully healed from his torn hamstring, and he is clicking very well with new WR George Pickens. In addition, WR Ceedee Lamb and Pickens have forged a great relationship which should help with team chemistry. RB Jaydon Blue has looked good so far but it is still unclear how the touches will be divided by the running backs. TE Brevyn Spann-Ford had been in line to be the backup TE but he has a minor injury at the moment, given TE Luke Schoonmaker a longer look. WR Kavonte Turpin is being used creatively but we still are awaiting a suspension which will come and likely be substantial, given the history between the NFL front office and Jerry Jones. Rookie PG Tyler Booker has looked very good in practice.

DE Micah Parsons is not practicing. He is staging a "hold-in". Rookie DE Donovan Ezeiruaku has been outstanding in training camp. CB Kaiir Elam has looked very good so far. We expect excellence from the linebacker room under DC Nike Eberflus.

On the injury front, LT Tyler Guyton has a broken bone in his leg and nay not be ready for week 1. However, it had initially been feared to be a torn ACL, so this is considered to be good news. CB Trevon Diggs is likely to start the season on the PUP. Rookie CB Shavon Revel, Jr. is not able to practice and LB DemarvionOvershown will likely start the season on the PUP. CB Caelen Carson is out 4-6 weeks due to a hyperextended knee. OG Tyler Smith suffered a minor injury today but has mild tendonitis in his knee and is being kept out of practice now as a precaution. OG Robert Jones suffered a broken bone in his neck and will miss at least 2-3 months.

Breaking News: The Cowboys will work out free-agent OT La'el Collins this weekend.

There is much to be encouraged by but there is much to be concerned about as well. We shall see how everything unfolds.

End.
