Dallas Cowboys Early August Scouting Report
Dr. Gil Brovar
8/15/2024

There are some notable items to report on but overall, the status of the team is unchanged from the beginning of training camp.

To start, we are still waiting for WR Ceedee Lamb to get his new contract. It appears that they are close, but when it comes to the Jones family, nothing is a given. There is no news regarding the contract extension of QB Dak Prescott. It is still unclear whether this will be his last season in Dallas because if he hits free agency next off-season, it is very unlikely that he will stay in Dallas. This is important because it was very clear from the first pre-season game that QB Trey Lance is not going to ever be a starting NFL QB. He may not even be a capable backup. He is very erratic with his throws and appears to be very late on his reads.

The running back room is still insufficient, but they do not seem to be interested in improving that. It is unclear what they will expect from RB Ezekiel Elliot, but I doubt he can live up to anything more than the most minimal expectations.

Most of their players did not play but the defensive schemes looked good, and it will be interesting how the first unit performs against other teams... first units. That is likely never going to be seen before the first game as they intend on not playing any starters in the pre-season. There are some notable performances such as OT Tyler Guyton who looked very good. WR Jalen Brooks also looked good as did LB DeMarvionOvershown, DE Marshawn Kneeland, S Markquese Bell and CB Caelen Carson.

The team signed a couple of defensive players that may have a role on the team this season. DE Carl Lawson was signed and has been an effective player in the past. If he is healthy, he can produce. They also traded for DT Jordan Philips, who may be able to share the nose tackle position with second year DT Mazi Smith. Mazi's growth would be very important to this team's future.

Further evaluation will take place in the next game and hopefully they will add a running back as well as extend Lamb and Prescott.

End.
