Chicago Bears June Scouting Report
Richard Fung
6/28/2024

Other than bits of news from OTAs, the most notable development for the Bears over the past month was that they were selected by the NFL to be featured on HBO’s "Hard Knocks" during training camp for the first time. With all the intrigue surrounding #1 pick QB Caleb Williams and a rising young team, this was not a surprise. It’ll make for must-see TV starting August 6th.

Quarterback

Williams continued to have ups and downs during OTAs, holding the ball too long and throwing late over the middle at times. But he also showed his arm talent and ability to improvise plenty of times. The Bears have thrown a lot at him, but he’s shown the ability to absorb a lot of information, and he’s always asking the coaches questions on how to improve. His work ethic and leadership have been impressive.

Running back

RB D’Andre Swift looked good during OTAs, showing off his pass-catching ability often.

Wide receiver

This receiving corps could really be something special. WR DJ Moore’s run-after-catch ability is electric, WR Keenan Allen is a master of the middle, and rookie WR Rome Odunze has been everything the team could’ve hoped for. He’s been able to quickly learn all three receiver spots and show off his contested catch skills. On June 18th, the Bears signed WR DeAndre Carter to a one-year deal. He’ll compete for a return man role in training camp.

Tight end

On June 10th, the team re-signed TE Marcedes Lewis to a one-year deal. He’ll mainly be a blocking tight end and a veteran leader.

Defense/Special teams

This defense can be a rowdy bunch at times, letting Williams know about it when they made good plays against him during OTAs. I guess it’s an indicator of the growing confidence this unit has. DT Gervon Dexter reshaped his body going into his sophomore season and looked noticeably quicker and more athletic during OTAs. Rookie P Tory Taylor was very impressive during OTAs.

More to come next month!

End.
