New York Giants May Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
5/22/2024

Here is the May update for the Giants after the draft and the conclusion of OTA’s this week:

There was a focus on improving the offensive line during the offseason. This was accomplished via free agency. Although there were no big contracts doled out, the group that was brought in should at least provide above average play, particularly pass blocking. In addition, most draft pundits gave the Giants a B+ draft grade for the picks they made last month. More to come on that later.

QB Daniel Jones participated in 7 on 7’s during OTA’s as he continued to work his way back from an ACL injury last November. He has looked well so far and looks to be on track to be ready for training camp. QB Drew Lock has also looked good this week and will push Jones for the starting job. A lot will depend on how Jones is recovering and his ability to be 100% by Week 1. The Giants coveted QB Drake Maye from North Carolina but simply could not afford the draft capital to get him. To their credit, they pivoted away from drafting a quarterback at that point.

RB Devin Singletary is a multi-faceted back and is very familiar with HC Brian Daboll from their time together in Buffalo. He is a 3 down player and the reserves will be vying for playing time. Young RB Eric Gray will be looking to make an impact in his second year with the team. A guy who I’m looking at is rookie RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. He’s a converted wide receiver. His skill set can be comparable to WR Deebo Samuel. It will be interesting to see how he will be utilized.

The receiving corps received a huge upgrade with the selection of WR Malik Nabers from LSU with the 6th overall pick. He will be WR1 and make life a lot easier for the quarterbacks and other receivers. He brings speed, hands, route running and play making ability to an offense that desperately needed it. WR Wan’dale Robinson, WR Darius Slayton, and WR Jalin Hyatt round out the rest of the primary receiving corps.

TE Darren Waller is still debating whether to retire or not. Clearly, he’s lost his desire so please retire! In anticipation of this, the G-Men drafted TE Theo Johnson from Penn State in the 4th round. He’s a plus athlete whose body of work in college was just average. The hope here is… with good coaching he could become a weapon in the passing game. TE Daniel Bellinger is still there and will provide depth and competition.

The veterans added to the offensive line will most certainly help. This group needs to stay healthy, particularly All Pro LT Andrew Thomas.

DT Dexter Lawrence, EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux, and EDGE Brian Burns will give opposing offenses headaches all season. The pass rush should be top notch.

LB Bobby Okereke and LB Micah McFadden lead a solid linebacking corps.

Young CB Deonte Banks is entrenched on one side. There will be competition for the other cornerback spot. The Giants drafted S Tyler Nubin from Minnesota in the 2ndround. He will provide leadership and ball hawking skills after the departure of S Xavier McKinney via free agency.

That’s it for now. More to come in June….

End.
