Kansas City Chiefs Late August Scouting Report
John Cooney
8/31/2022

Before anything, let’s lift up a prayer of thanks and appreciation for Chiefs’ QB legend Len Dawson.

Amen!

Training camp… DONE!

Pre-season games… DONE!

Roster cuts? The ‘turk’ once again wielded a sharp and unkind blade the past couple of day, cutting down the Chiefs’ roster to the required 53. Those getting the ax were:

QB Dustin Crum

RB Jerrion Ealy, Tayon Fleet-Davis, Derrick Gore

WR Josh Gordon, Omar Bayless, Corey Coleman, Daurice Fountain, Devin Gray, Gary Jennings, Aaron Parker, Cornell Powell

TE Matt Bushman, Jordan Franks

OT VitaliyGurman, Roderick Johnson, EvinKsiezarczyk, David Steinmetz

OG Mike Caliendo

C Austin Reiter

DE Austin Edwards, Azur Kamara, Kehinde Oginni Hassan

DT Matt Dickerson, Taylor Stallworth, Danny Shelton

LB Jermaine Carter, Jack Cochrane, Elijah Lee, Mike Rose

CB DicaprioBootle, Lonnie Johnson Jr.

S Zayne Anderson, Nazeeh Johnson, Devon Key

DB Brandin Dandridge, Nasir Greer

So, for the fantasy football folks seeking those skill positions that matter most in Kansas City, we have:

QBs Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne and rookie Steve Beuchele.

WRs JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, rookie Skyy Moore, Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson.

Yes, the Josh Gordonexperience is over… about time!

TE Travis Kelce, Blake Bell (likely start out on IR) and Noah Gray.

Ah, the RBs… Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Jerick McKinnon (gonna’ matter more than we realize at this time), Isiah Pacheco (rookie) and yes, he survived (for now), Ronald Jones.

FB is Michael "1st Down" Burton.

Quick fantasy thoughts after seeing, hearing and diagnosing everything over the past 3-4 months. Fanballers best be all-in on JuJu. He and Mahomes are determined and dedicated to creating the big comeback to the high ranks of WRs for Smith-Schuster. Anyone doubting Smith-Schuster’s return to 90+ catches is just not paying attention. Fellow wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling is absolutely about ti make a lot of big play noise in 2022. He and Mahomes may have worked together more often and longer than any other WR on the Chiefs roster. It matters!

Rookie Skyy Moore will have his moments, but he is currently running behind Mecole Hardman. Draft accordingly.

TE Travis Kelce… CHALK!

IDP stuff.

Last report I noted "I’ll be checking in more on the D-line next EYE in the Sky Report."So here goes…

Rookie George Karlaftis is set to make an impact week-1. He has displayed power, quicks and smarts throughout pre-season and in camp. Fading Frank Clark is just a situational pass-rusher and I wouldn’t put any of my IDP chips down on Clark this year. Have to say the same thing about veteran Carlos Dunlap. The D-line is looking awesome inside with Chris Jones and Derrick Nnadi creating havoc for opposing centers and guards. Jones should be up for a big year with the addition of young energy from Karlaftis and hopefully him being added to the rotation will bring fresher legs for both Dunlap and Clark, leading to more pressure on the QBs.

Love the LBs, led by Nick Bolton. Bolton and Willie Gay are athletic with dynamic closing speed on ball-carriers. Bolton is IDP gold and just getting started.

AS I said last take, I’m hawk-eyeing Juan Thornhill this year. If the D-line generates consistent pass-rush pressure on QBs, Thornhill will be able to attack passing lanes, jump routes on TEs, and RBs and create turnovers via INTs. He and Justin Reid form a darn solid safety tandem. Young veteran CB L’Jarius Sneed will be less busy in 2022 as offenses look to target rookie CB Trent McDuffie on the other side. He may be a target but that attention also leads to INT opportunities and higher tackle numbers for the rookie.

My IDP Chiefs chips go on Nick Bolton, all-in there. I’ll lay some down on Juan Thornhill and most certainly on Chris Jones. And what the heck let’s go in on the rookie, Karlaftis as well.

Next report I set up Week One of the 2022 regular season, as the Chiefs head west to Arizona to cage the Cardinals.

End.

Testimonials

"By winning SI.com four straight years, it's clear you know what you are doing, making my decision to subscribe a smart and easy one!"
-- Fred Wills

"I began using FFM in the late 1990s. For 20+ years they were an extremely valuable resource, as I enjoyed great success in my league during that period. Unfortunately, my league came to an end during the Covid years, and I stopped subscribing to FFM. After a year without Fantasy Football, I started looking into online sports betting and quickly realized FFM could again become a valuable source of information for prop bets on individual players. I resumed my subscription with FFM and have not looked back. FFM is clearly a dual threat; they can severely increase your odds of success in both fantasy leagues as well as prop betting. I almost feel guilty with the tremendous returns I get from such a modest investment in FFM."
-- Sal B.

I did something to mess up my log in to the site and was unable to access it. One call to FFMastermind (Mike personally handled the issue) and things were cleared up and I was back in immediately."
