New York Giants July Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
7/27/2022

Here is the Giants update for July, one day into training camp:

QB Daniel Jones will be under the microscope in his 4th year as his 5th year option was not picked up by the team. He is a very cheap option this year for the cap strapped G-Men but things will improve next year from a cap perspective. In addition, it will be a much better collegiate quarterback class in 2023 in the event the team is searching for a franchise QB.I believe the new regime has done a good job rebuilding the offensive line and providing DJ with offensive weapons. The offense will be designed to feature his specific skill set. That being said, I believe his biggest challenge in 2022 will be to stay on the field. He has proven to be brittle in his first 3 years so that label needs to be shed. In the event of injury, experienced backup QB Tyrod Taylor is a significant improvement over the substandard backups Big Blue utilized last year.

RB Saquon Barkley has a lot to prove just like his quarterback. He has been criticized for being a home run hitter and a back always wanted to bounce a run to the outside. That may be true in part as he isn't a prototypical between the tackles runner but he is a very skilled receiver as well. I expect him to be used in a multitude of formations and provide matchup issues for defenses. The only thing he doesn't do well is pass protection but that will be addressed accordingly. He also has been brittle so he needs to stay healthy. RB Matt Brieda is a nice backup but his does not profile as a workhorse runner.

The receivers room is jammed packed with all types of players. WR Kenny Golladay needs to stay healthy and utilize his big frame/catch radius accordingly. They have a pair of young quick receivers in WR Kadarius Toney and WR Wan'Dale Robinson. The coaching staff need to get these guys in space as they are very quick & shifty. Veteran WR Sterling Shepard is rehabbing an Achilles injury. Any production from him will be a bonus. Do not be surprised if WR Darius Slayton is cut for cap savings. He isn't a special teams contributor either which diminishes his value further.

The tight end position has a lot of questions. The hope is 4th round pick TE Daniel Bellinger will show his mettle and seize the job during training camp. He has a very good all-around skill set with very good hands to boot. He came off the PUP list yesterday after a brief stay. I'm excited to see what he can do. He profiles as a Kevin Boss/Jake Ballard type of player.

I am very excited to see what DC Wink Martindale's defense will do this year. He runs a very blitz heavy scheme with multiple players attacking the offense. It's a system the players love and he is most definitely a players coach. This group will definitely set a tone and there are multiple players that should excel such as DE Azeez Ojulari, S Xavier McKinney, DT Leonard Williams and rookie DE Kayvon Thibodeaux. A big question mark will be which cornerback steps up as the #2 behind CB Adoree Jackson with the departure of CB James Bradberry.

PK Graham Gano had an outstanding season in 2021 and I expect more of the same in 2022. He is a consummate pro.

That's it for now.

More to come in August with preseason game news...

End.
