Houston Texans June Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
6/27/2022

Here in June, we see a team that is miles ahead of where it was last year. Stable coaching and an experienced home grown QB; the culture is growing with new guys. Most older guys are somewhere else.

This years’ offensive line has new starting guards with LG Kenyon Green and RG A.J. Cann. Will RT Tytus Howard and LT Laremy Tunsil buy in to the new culture?

Rookie RB Dameon Pierce and RB Marlon Mack are two new serious O weapons available in the rushing game.

Expect draft pick WR John Metchie III to join WR Brandin Cooks and WR Nico Collins as the slot receiver. TE Brevin Jordan is a second-year hope, the Texans expect him to grow as a receiver. Will any of this group achieve fantasy value this year?

In the NFL International Pathway program, the Texans have been allocated 6-foot-5, 272-pound DT Adedayo Odeleye. I saw video of this Brit who is originally out of Nigeria. Love at first sight I would say. Additionally, the Texans have been signing veteran FA DEs. DE Ogbo Okoronkwo, DE Rasheem Green, DE Mario Addison and DE Jerry Hughes have all signed. Without a big star on the DL the plan is to keep everyone fresh by rotating the linemen. This D will only work well if it can put pressure on the QB.

The D did draft a middle linebacker, but spent two premium picks in the secondary. CB Derek Stingley Jr was the NFL’s third overall selection. One of their second-round selections was FS Jalen Pitre. The secondary play must be better this year. Cannot just give up big plays to the super passers that are in the league now. At least not every time.

Despite multiple selections in the early rounds of the draft the Texans are paper thin of the talent needed to compete against the better teams. The best thing that could happen is for QB Davis Mills to progress so they can use their multiple future first round selections on a monster defensive end and/or outside linebacker in next year’s draft. Edge Will Anderson instead of QB C.J. Stroud. Providence may send both. The Texans have a plan, multiple future draft picks and 100 MM of extra cap space in 2023. What they do not have now is enough stars. I cannot name even one!

End.
