Cincinnati Bengals May Scouting Report
Mark Huber
5/5/2022

The Bengals completed their 2022 draft and it was overloaded with defensive players.

The team added DBs Daxton Hill, Cam Taylor-Britt, Tycen Anderson to the a veteran group along with defensive linemen Zach Carter and Jeffrey Gunter and offensive lineman Cordell Volson.

The team likes the versatility of all the players they drafted. Each has the ability to play multiple positions which the defensive coaches seek in players. Aside from being able to hedge their bet so to speak against injuries, it allows for schemes that are not easily determined.

So fantasy football players might like to take the Bengals defense/special teams and reap the rewards. Individually, don't know that any player warrants a start in IDP leagues but Daxton Hill might be a stash at defensive back and Zachary Carter would be a good taxi squad guy along the DL.

As of this writing, the team signed 14 undrafted free agents but none would appear at this moment to be fantasy worthy, even in the deepest of leagues.

It would appear the team is set to go forward with the roster they have. Could be a signing or two that makes an impact but none are expected at this moment.

Possible areas of upgrades would include tight end and wide receiver, in terms of fantasy football. I think this team likes Hurst more than fantasy managers, especially the ones who've been burned by Hurst in recent years. Still he'll get single coverage for sure and could flourish. But after him it's unproven talent at best. Drew Sample is a must-see before we put him on our fantasy rosters. Not sure if there is a tight end out there still but might keep an eye on that.

At wideout, the Bengals have the best top 3 receivers in the NFL without question. Beyond that, however, nothing jumps out in terms of fantasy. They might be good lockerroom guys or special teamers but none have been consistent long-term fantasy producers. That could open the door for an addition as training camp nears. Thought Justyn Ross was possible, given the connection with Tee Higgins and Clemson but Ross opted for an easier path to opportunities by going to Kansas City. While I wouldn't expect someone like Odell Beckham Jr to sign, I wouldn't be shocked if a veteran was added just to make sure an injury to the top 3 doesn't derail another post-season run.

In free agency, the Bengals added starting offensive linemen La'el Collins, Alex Cappa and Ted Karras along with starting tight end Hayden Hurst and back Nick Eubanks.

The free agent losses, thus far, are tight end CJ Uzomah, wideout Auden Tate, tackle Fred Johnson, center Trey Hopkins and defensive backs Trae Waynes and Darius Phillips; and defensive lineman Wyatt Ray, Mike Daniels and Larry Ogunjobi.

End.
