Houston Texans February Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
2/24/2022

It’s clear that last year’s Texans’ implosion was intentional! The Texans flushed QB Deshaun Watson before there were any silly lawsuits. They started over at QB with fresh, young, and cheap rookie talent. Securing the number three overall pick in this year’s draft should create an opportunity for excitement and franchise talent.

2021 saw development of the previous year’s young prospects including RB Scottie Phillips, T Charlie Heck, DT Ross Blacklock and OLB Jonathan Greenard. This collection of alleged young talent got big time coaching in 2021. A handful of the FA’s signed last year really worked out well; the Texans will make every effort to retain LB Kamu Grugier-Hill, nickel CB Tavierre Thomas and DT Maliek Collins.

Last year’s rookies came through. The draft provided starters at QB, WR, TE, LB and DT.

The OL fails of the past two years are well documented. When former fan favorite LT Laremy Tunsil went out with a torn thumb mid-season who would have expected he’d sit out the rest of the season? Whispers indicate he didn’t want to play here anymore. Will the Texans finally fix that OL? If they do, they’ll develop a QB and create a running game. Changes in the coaching staff this year included new blood at OL. Here’s hoping that teaching a mean streak is possible for these meek gentlemen.

The latest concerning Deshaun is that several teams including Denver will make a pitch before the Draft. Houston Police Department has completed their investigation; we’ll know within 60 days if he’ll be no billed or be criminally charged by the Harris County Grand Jury. Civil suits will probably be settled at that point if he’s no billed. I believe Deshaun will accept a trade to Denver or Miami before the Draft.

End.
