Houston Texans Late August Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
8/31/2021

QB Tyrod Taylor is a quality QB, by money ball standards he will more than suffice for the Texans needs. If he doesn’t get hurt, I can see him in the 20-25 passing TDs range. The Texans will be behind against the good teams this year and he will have to pass. After him QB Davis Mills isn’t ready. Maybe later in the year he could play if Taylor goes down. Maybe. The Texans will be playing for a high draft pick to use on a QB in April’s draft.

WR Brandin Cooks and rookie WR Nico Collins will score the most passing TDs. WR Chris Conley will be in the mix. WR Anthony Miller is out with a shoulder dislocation but could be a scorer when he returns. WR Keke Coutee, TE Pharaoh Brown and TE Brevin Jordon aren’t going to be scorers on this team. Coutee probably won’t make the cut. If you’re desperate for a scoring TE, TE Jordon Akins is the speed guy.

The OL is looking good on the left side. The right side is still suspect especially if RT Charlie Heck sticks as starter. He’s a big guy who has learned to hold within the rules. The OL coaching seems a lot crisper this year than last.

I say RB Scottie Phillips should be your dark horse RB this year. Pick him in the last round of your draft. RB Phillip Lindsey and RB David Johnson will get lots of carries. Select them all at the end of your draft, they aren’t going to be of high value / high priority for anyone this year so you should be able to pick them up cheap. One of those them will be the goal line guy.

DC Lovie Smith’s new D is kind of working. They are getting the turnovers but can’t seem to stop a good O. The Texans signed two thousand FA linebackers during the off season. So far, the linebackers seem to be the weakness of this D. S Justin Reid and S Lonnie Johnson will play well but the CBs seem to be a weak spot. The D line looks to be going in the right direction.

The special teams are playing very good ball. Veteran KR Andre Roberts can find the seams and has a burst. I like to pick STs as a starter from week to week based on the schedule. I would not be reticent about starting the Texans special team at some point during the season.

End.
