Houston Texans Early August Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
8/17/2021

It’s clear who the best receivers are after the first two weeks of practice. WR Brandin Cooks, WR Nico Collins, WR Chris Conley and WR Anthony Miller. With Miller out with a shoulder dislocation I also need to mention WR Keke Coutee. TE Pharaoh Brown is holding down the top with TE Jordon Akins being the speed guy. I expect rookie TE Brevin Jordon or TE Kahale Warring as a long shot to stick.

I had no idea QB Tyrod Taylor was a quality QB. You can tell by watching him practice that he has the experience, the arm, and the intangibles to be an acceptable money ball asset. After him the Golden Hope QB Davis Mills isn’t ready. Maybe later in the year, next year or maybe never. If Taylor can play the Texans are game, without him ‘hello high draft pick’.

The offensive line is looking more than acceptable. Still don’t know who all the starters are but look for the RBs to excel on the left side. The right side to me is still suspect especially if ORT Charlie Heck starts. At 6’8" he’s a big guy and is responding well to coaching. Word is he’s learning ways to circumvent the holding rules using tall guy’s long arms tactics. He can use all the coaching he can get. We’ll have to see on this one.

I say pick any of the RBs on this team at this point. RB Phillip Lindsey is my favorite at press time. RB David Johnson and RB Mark Ingram will have their opportunity on game day. Select them all at the end of your draft, they aren’t going to be of high value / high priority for anyone this year so you should be able to pick them up cheap. One of those guys will be the goal line guy.

DC Lovie Smith’s new D seems to be working. The Texans signed two thousand FA linebackers / defensive lineman in the off season. There will be someone at least kind of good to play each of the front seven positions. Last year’s D coaching was so poor; you can see the difference with this staff. I like watching S Justin Reid and S Lonnie Johnson in practice. Not a Championship D currently, but looks to me to be going in the right direction.

More to come…

End.
