Los Angeles Chargers Early August Scouting Report
Brad Willis
8/15/2021

In a boring preseason game that told us very little, the Chargers beat the L.A. Rams 13-6. Most of the starters did not play in this one. Here is a look at the present state of the Chargers as things currently stand.

QB: Outstanding young QB Justin Herbert enters his 2nd season and has a deep bench full of targets to throw to. Expect Herbert to be a Top 10 quarterback chosen in most fantasy drafts.

RB: The only Chargers RB I can recommend now is the versatile RB Austin Ekeler. Unlike the Bolts deep cadre of wideouts, their running backs have been hot and cold. Rookie RB Larry Rountree may be worth a late round flyer in larger leagues.

WR: As mentioned, the Chargers have quite a few quality wide receivers. The obvious pick up is WR Keenan Allen, who should be viewed as a WR1. WR Mike Williams will likely be the Chargers WR2, although I'd view him as a hit or miss fantasy WR3 or FLEX. There is a slew of receivers who may make an impact, but I don't think I'd draft any of them. Just keep an eye on who is producing and who isn't. You will have an opportunity to grab most of these guys in the free agent heap, but at this point I'd say despite the depth, Allen is the only no-brainer with respect to your fantasy draft.

TE: In my mind, the tight end with big play ability is TE Donald Parham, Jr. who is currently 2nd on the depth chart. The starter will be TE Jared Cook, who at 34 is a bit long in the tooth for an NFL player. Also in the mix is rookie TE Tre' McKitty. Frankly, I'm not sure who will get the looks and who will not. I'm not even sure I'd draft a Chargers' tight end, as the situation remains unclear. Cook is probably the safest late round bet. Parham is riskier, but has bigger upside potential, as the guy is tall, fast and has good hands. Sort of a "freak of nature" WR/TE hybrid type of player who can stretch the field.

PK: While nothing is carved in stone, currently it appears that PK Michael Badgley is the leading candidate to return as the Chargers kicker. Frankly I'm unimpressed by Badgley and do not recommend drafting any of the Chargers' kickers.

DEF: I expect the Chargers defense to be at least average and possibly a bit better than average. S Derwin James, Jr. is healthy and is probably amongst the best at his position. DE Joey Bosa remains a force to be reckoned with. LB Drue Tranquill was excellent before being injured. Unfortunately, I don't believe that the Chargers defense has a lot of depth.

Good luck with your fantasy drafts!

End.
