New Orleans Saints June Scouting Report
Jake Pittman
6/29/2021

The Draft and Free-Agency Periods are now over, and teams have pretty much solidified their rosters by now. Not a lot has changed roster-wise for teams since last month, but now we, as analyst, can finally start to make a verdict on what players will be emerging as the best fantasy options for their teams. These are the players that fantasy managers should be selecting to in the draft from the New Orleans Saints.

Quarterback:

While there has been no promise, QB Jameis Winston has a clear-path to becoming the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. Winston has had a lot of questions come up about his accuracy, awareness and decision-making abilities, but one thing we know about Winston is he knows how to put up big numbers. Winston has shown he has no fear when it comes to stretching the field, and taking his fair share of high-risk, high-reward throws. If Winston keeps the starting job throughout the season, I have a hard time seeing him not end up as a Top-15 Quarterback. He won't be a very expensive asset to acquire in fantasy football, and he is a great option for anyone waiting till the end of drafts to select their starting quarterback.

Running Back:

As I've said before, and as I am sure you already know, RB Alvin Kamara is a top 5 running back for fantasy managers, and he will be as long as he is healthy. He catches tons of passes, he is one of the most efficient runners in recent memory, and Head Coach Sean Payton has all the confidence in the world in his abilities. Draft him in the first round and build your squad around his amazing production.

RB Latavius Murray is one of the best handcuffs in all of fantasy football, and he has the potential to have some stand-alone value as well. I would advise Kamara owners to try and grab Murray in the later rounds, and Non-Kamara owns could still stash him and find some value at the end of the draft if he is still available.

Wide Receiver:

With Winston at the helm, WR Michael Thomas has a great opportunity to return to being a WR1. Thomas was targeted at a great rate during Winston's time as the starter in New Orleans last season, and he is still an outstanding and efficient receiver when healthy. I would draft Thomas in the middle of round two, and he should deliver tremendous value for fantasy managers. If you took Thomas as the overall #1 Wide Receiver last season, then you may be a little bit hurt, but you have to forgive and forget. Don't let your bad blood turn you away from an outstanding value in the 2nd round.

This season is WR Trequan Smith's last chance to show that he was worth the Saint's draft pick from a couple years ago. Smith has shown flashes that he can produce, but he hasn't had any consistent production since he entered the league. With WR Emmanuel Sanders out of the picture, Smith has the best opportunity of his career to show he belongs, and I think he is worth a late rate stash to see if he can step up this season.

Tight End:

This year there are a lot of really good young tight end options for fantasy managers, and I think that TE Adam Trautman is one of these players. Trautman didn't have much of an opportunity to show what he can do last season behind TE Jared Cook, but with Cook leaving to go to the Los Angeles Chargers, Trautman has a big opportunity to secure a large share of the targets. In redraft leagues, Trautman should be selected at the end of the draft. It will be pretty easy to tell how much of a role he will play in the offense during the first couple of weeks, so you can either start him or drop him based off of his early season production. In dynasty, he should be stashed in all leagues as he has a great opportunity to work his way into the Top-10 of tight ends during the next couple of years.

Defense and Special Teams:

The Saints defense should be a reliable streaming option in plus matchups, but the more turnover prone Winston could put this defense in some bad situations this season. That's why you should keep a close eye on the defensive fantasy production early in the season, to see if they will be as good as they have been in the past for fantasy managers.

K Wil Lutz should continue to be one of the marquee kickers in fantasy football in this offense that should find themselves in the red zone regularly. He can be drafted in the last round of drafts and relied on for the entire season.

Summary:

The New Orleans Saints will look a lot different than they have in the past now the QB Drew Brees has retired, but this offense still has its fair share of fantasy options and talent. RB Alvin Kamara should be the main producer in this offense, but I expect WR Michael Thomas to have a bounce-back campaign in 2021. QB Jameis Winston shouldn't be forgotten about, as his gunslinger mentality, and lack of fear is usually a good combination for fantasy production.

End.
