Los Angeles Chargers June Scouting Report
Brad Willis
6/26/2021

By all accounts the Chargers should be generally improved in 2021. The core of the team returns with some potential help from the recent draft and a few free agent signings here and there. Here is a look at the team, as things currently stand.

QB: As a rookie, QB Justin Herbert had a huge 2020 season. There is no reason to believe that he will not have an outstanding year in 2021, making Herbert a high round selection in most fantasy drafts. The Chargers have signed veteran QB Chase Daniel as a backup to Herbert, but he is not expected to have any fantasy value so long as Herbert remains healthy.

RB: The Chargers look to go with the versatile RB Austin Ekeler as their primary running back. Ekeler is good at both run and pass, so he is quite valuable to the team. Primary backups likely remain RB Joshua Kelley and RB Justin Jackson, both of whom have looked hot and cold at times. At this point in time, I suspect that Ekeler is the only running back worth drafting in most leagues.

WR: We will see a familiar lineup at wideout with WR Keenan Allen as the primary option, while WR Mike Williams should continue to serve as the #2 option at the position. The Chargers also have several other promising receivers such as WR Tyron Johnson, WR Jalen Guyton, WR K.J. Hill and rookie WR Josh Palmer, but at this stage, I do not think any of them are worth drafting. But things could certainly change, so watch and learn!

TE: It appears that free agent TE Jared Cook will serve as the Bolts' lead tight end. I have seen some talk that they might have difficulty keeping TE Donald Parham, Jr. I hope for their sake that they can hang on to Parham, as I personally feel he could make a big impact. Parham is a freak of nature in terms of size and speed at that position. He is a deep threat every time he is on the field, yet he is a big man. If he remains, he is possibly worth a later draft pick in larger leagues. We will also likely see 3rd round draft pick TE Tre' McKitty on the field, but obviously he's a rookie and thus unproven at the NFL level.

PK: I'm not sure who the Chargers' kicker will be. As of this writing, it looks like possibly PK Mike Badgley, even though he was atrocious last season.

DEF: It appears that DE Melvin Ingram is gone, most likely to the Rams or possibly the 49ers. The Chargers 4th round draft pick, DE Chris Rumph, will likely be given the opportunity to show what he can do. I like the team's 2nd round draft pick of DB Asante Samuel a lot. DE Joey Bosa is outstanding and returns to keep opposing quarterbacks running. The Chargers should have an above average defense, but I'm still not sure that they have the kind of depth that they would wish for.

End.
