Houston Texans May Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
5/5/2021

I’m always fascinated with the UFAs signed by the Texans after the Draft. The Texans only drafted five players leaving lots of room for those guys. They usually peter out before September but in May I have high hopes for a couple of prospects.

WR Marlon Williams out of Central Florida is a slot receiver, a position the Texans can’t seem to fill. An unimpressive 4.59 40-time for a guy who can break tackles after making tough catches over the middle could translate into an NFL niche if he’s hungry enough. Watch the tape, you’ll like him. How about OT Carson Green of Texas A&M? Smart, big, and versatile. Can he contribute as a guard, a Texan high need position? You never know about these guys until you’re down the road.

Last year’s first selection in the Draft was DT Ross Blacklock out of TCU who was unimpressive as a rookie. This year the Texans selected another TCU product, WILL LB Garret Wallow. It’s crucial the new coaching staff develops their talent. With the Texans heading into a possible tanked season the D won’t be respectable again until they draft OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux in next year's draft.

The Texans failed to draft a CB. Can we expect them to sign a FA as we get closer to June first?

LT Laremy Tunsil and RT Tytus Howard form bookends for a offensive line that needs lots of re-tooling in the middle. They cut last year’s Gs and centers and signed a ton of FAs to compete for those interior positions. Can the offensive line develop after a year of Hell? If not the quarterback will have to run for his life again and the talents of RB David Johnson, RB Mark Ingram and RB Phillip Lindsey will be wasted.

If third round selection QB Davis Mills comes in and impresses he’ll get his opportunity to lead this team. There is no one else.

I could never get close to the Texans in the past. Who knows what will emerge in 2021? I am happy that the Texans will be a new team. Hopefully there aren’t enough players making mega bucks that will be naïve enough to let BLM destroy their career and the team!

End.
