Los Angeles Chargers February Scouting Report
Brad Willis
2/27/2021

It is late February, which means that it is time to start talking football again, although obviously it isearly on. Let us look at the team as things currently stand.

QB: Surprisingly, QB Justin Herbert had an amazing rookie season. He is a top 10 starter, and possibly a top 5 starter, in just about any fantasy league. That said, Herbert could use some increased protection from his offensive line, so look for moves in that area, either in free agency and/or via the draft.

RB: While RB Austin Ekeler has cemented his position as the bolts top running back, his back-ups showed flashes but none of them dazzled or even came close. I would expect to see the team draft at least one running back, although not until later rounds.

WR: I do not think the Chargers need a lot of help at this position. WR Keenan Allen remains the go to guy. I suspect the Chargers will keep WR Mike Williams around, as he is proven to be a solid deeper threat. WR Jalen Guyton and WR Tyron Johnson have both impressed. I think they are in relatively good shape here, but again; you may see a later round draft selection at wideout.

TE: Unfortunately, TE Hunter Henry is an unrestricted free agent. In my view, Henry is amongst the best tight ends in the league and I am not sure the Chargers will be able to maintain him. If not, the starting job will below to the underrated TE Donald Parham, Jr. While Parham has considerable upside, in my view he is a definite step down from Henry, but the good news is that there is talent waiting in the wings, if needed.

PK: While he improved towards the end of the season, 2020 was a shaky year for PK Mike Badgley. I would say he has no better than a 50/50 chance of retaining his job. The Chargers could draft a kicker or add one via free agency.

DEF: Other than at offensive line, the Chargers need the most help at defense. DE Melvin Ingram is a free agent and given his age, injury history, and salary level, they may not retain him. The Chargers also need help at linebacker and in the secondary. The Chargers defense has been injury prone and there has been a lack of depth. Look for the team to try to add that depth through the draft primarily and through free agency.

That is my report for now. I hope you stay safe.

End.
