Los Angeles Chargers Late August Scouting Report
Brad Willis
8/30/2020

As we approach the season’s 2020 regular season opener, the Chargers have announced that this season’s games will be without any fans in the stands. This should represent very little change for the team, as they’ve had very few "hometown" fans show up anyway. Here is a look at the team, as things currently stand.

QB: Expect to see QB Tyrod Taylor as the Bolts starting quarterback. In my view, Taylor is a reasonable choice as a backup, but I do not personally see him as a quality starter. While he could surprise, I’d avoid Taylor in your fantasy draft. If Taylor falters, that may open the door sooner than latter for rookie QB JustinHerbert, although preliminarily, he does not have any fantasy value at this stage.

RB: The clear starter is RB Austin Ekeler and he should be considered a top 12 or so fantasy running back in most leagues. I suspect that RB Justin Jackson will be the backup at the position, although a competition does exist. Jackson is likely not worth a draft pick at this time, but that could change.

WR: Likely, WR Keenan Allen will remain a weaker WR1 in most fantasy leagues. While Allen is good, he can be injury-prone and weakness and uncertainty at the quarterback position hurts his value a bit. #2 WR Mike Williams has an injured shoulder and will miss 2-4 weeks, so draft accordingly. His injury helps Allen and TE Hunter Henry a bit. However, Williams has a big play reputation and having Taylor under center hurts his value. When healthy, he will likely be a WR2 in most leagues, with WR3 potential if his quarterback(s) fail to perform well.

TE: I expect TE Hunter Henry to be a top 10 at the position if he can remain healthy. TE Donald Parham, Jr., who came over from the XFL, is an interesting player, but Henry will limit his opportunities and is not worth a draft pick.

PK: The kicker should, once again, be Mike Badgley. Consider him an upper, middle-of-the-pack kicker. I do have concerns about the Chargers ability to move the ball with QB Tyrod Taylor under center, but certainly Taylor will be given good opportunity to perform.

DEF: I expect the Chargers defense to be in the top 10 from a fantasy perspective. Recently, S Derwin James exited practice with a hamstring injury, so it is unknown if that will keep him out of the season opener as of this writing. The teams bookend ends DE Joey Bosa and DE Melvin Ingram are probably the best duo in the league. I expect good fantasy numbers from the Chargers defense, although they may be on the field more than they would prefer.

End.
