Los Angeles Chargers Mid-August Scouting Report
Brad Willis
8/15/2020

There haven’t really been a lot of changes in Chargersville lately, if in fact there is a Chargersville, as no one seems to much care about the team. Los Angeles doesn’t care about them. San Diego used to, until they left for L.A. But let’s take a look at the team as it currently stands.

QB: While there is a bit of a battle between QB Tyrod Taylor and rookie QB Justin Herbert, I would expect Taylor to be the starter. Unfortunately, I don’t have high expectations, and certainly, if he doesn’t perform, it could open the door later for Herbert. As of this writing, you don’t want any part of the Chargers quarterback uncertainty. We’ve seen Taylor and while he’s a serviceable backup, I don’t view him as a quality starter.

RB: With RB Melvin Gordon having left for Denver, the starting job clearly belongs to RB Austin Ekeler. And Ekeler should be a very solid fantasy option this year as a strong RB1. There’s a bit of a battle for the #2 job between RB Justin Jackson and rookie RB Joshua Kelley. Personally, I’ve been impressed by Jackson and I suspect that he’ll earn the backup spot, but injuries have been a concern.

WR: You have 2 of the League’s best WRs in WR Keenan Allen and WR Mike Williams. Allen is a WR1 and Williams a slightly weaker WR1 or strong WR2. There’s a battle for the 3rd wideout, but I don’t think that’s especially relevant from a fantasy perspective at this time.

TE: If healthy, I expect TE Hunter Henry to be in the top 5 at the position. Unfortunately, Henry has been oft-injured. But given the fact that QB Tyrod Taylor is not in the same league as departed QB Philip Rivers, Henry could be in a position to get a lot of check down looks and has the legs and speed to make something happen.

PK: I expect PK Mike Badgley to return as the starter and he should be an above average option. Look for more FGs this year and fewer TDs, due to question marks at the quarterback position.

DEF: This is one of the Chargers stronger areas. Quite solid at DE and in the secondary. Linebackers are so so, and the defensive line is a bit soft. But still, I’d look for good performance overall, with a probable top 10 ranking.

More to come later this month!

End.
