Houston Texans July Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
7/24/2020

Will the UFAs signed by the Texans after the Draft have an opportunity to stick. Will the uncertainty of work out schedules stop this group from being able to show anything? Or will an expanded roster help them stick? Who were they?

QB Nick Tiano out of Chattanooga looks and sounds like Tony Romo in the rough. 6’4", 240 lbs. with an NFL arm, RB legs whose best trait may be what’s between his ears. Watch the tape, you’ll like him. How about RB Scottie Phillips from Ole Miss. Vision to wait for the blocks to develop then one cut, plant and go. Almost a swim move. Not too fast but with a good OL who knows. Others that have opportunity in need positions are NT Auzoyah Alufohai, OG Cordel Iwuagwu and blocking TE Dylan Stapleton. You never know until you know about these guys. Can they get a real shot?

Other than their first selection in this year’s draft, DT Ross Blacklock, what other of their four draft selections will get enough reps to contribute in 2020. Are they prospects for the future or are they in the same boat as the UFAs?

Anticipating future league salary cap downward trends may force some teams to unload today’s stars. The Texans want to win now and have $18.ish MM of remaining cap cash to pick up more talent if salary cap dumping becomes a reality.

OLT Laremy Tunsil, OLG Max Scharping, C Nick Martin and ORT Tytus Howard could be the beginnings of a very good OL. You must believe they will be able to score this year.

I believe the Texans are looking for D help. Last year’s D play in the play-off loss to the Chiefs says it all. Next month I hope to be able to give a progress report on the developing O and the semi-rebuilt D. Can young CB Gareon Conley and CB Lonnie Johnson grow into real NFL CBs? Will the front seven put pressure on the QB? I need to see some football to answer those questions.

End.
