Arizona Cardinals June Scouting Report
David Vohs
6/30/2020

First, let me please express my condolences for the family of former AZ QB Joe Bugel. Joe passed at 80 years old. Coach Joe Bugel served as the head coach from 1990-1993 and sustained a 20-44 record. But Joe Bugel won’t be remembered for his record, but for his love for the game and how Joe Bugel treated his staff, players, and leadership. Joe was an amazing football coach and leaves a legacy of professionalism and teaching. Thank you Joe Bugel…. I am sure the Redskins fans mourn this loss as well.

June was pretty quiet after the NFL draft. All eyes are on COVID-19 and how it will affect the upcoming season? How do YOU think it will affect the season?

My prediction:

  • The NFL will reduce the number of pre-season games making it tougher to review some of the younger players
  • The NFL will not allow fans to the games at least for the first 4 regular season games. Then perhaps they will start allowing a certain % of fans per section. Some sort of spacing/lottery will have to be done. Perhaps the ability to see 1-2 games for every fan?
  • If players/fans start getting sick, reductions and perhaps back to only players will happen.
  • As a season ticket holder, I think I would rather have this season be sitting in front of the Television than a high chance of getting sick.
  • What do YOU think will happen this season. Use the contact form to e-mail FFMASTERMIND.COM site owner Mike Nazarek and mention this article in your response. Mike would love to hear from you all.

As far as the Arizona Cardinals go, the team is looking strong and ready to compete in a very very good NFC Division. The NFC West has in my opinion 4 very strong teams with the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams. I could see these teams really splitting most of the season and hoping their out of Division foes are fodder for wins!

QB: Again, the Cardinals are set and gambling on QB Kyler Murray staying healthy this season. The Cardinals have 4 QBs currently on the roster, but only 2 will make the team including QB Brett Hundley and of course QB Kyler Murray. The other two are pretty much camp bodies or maybe Practice Squad.

RB: No real updates here either. RB David Johnson was traded away to the Houston Texans leaving RB Kenyon Drake as the starter for the Arizona Cardinals. RB Kenyon Drake signed an $8.4M 1 year fully guaranteed contract with the Cardinals for 2020. Locked in! RB Chase Edmonds and RB Eno Benjamin are expected to round out the final 53 man roster unless a surprise happens in training camp. RB D.J. Foster is also in the mix and a local favorite. RB DJ Foster has made his name mostly on special teams so far.

WR: Is this the season WR Andy Isabella steps up? Instead of drafting WR DK Metcalf, the Cardinals chose small school stud WR Andy Isabella who really did NOT show up last year at all. Please tell me this is the year he can spread the field with his speed and allow WR DeAndre Hopkins, WR Larry Fitzgerald and WR Christian Kirk more of an open field to work. QB Kyler Murray has to be licking his chops to get on the field with this crew. In addition to those names, WR Hakeem Butler, WR KeeSean Johnson will battle for a spot on the team with WR Johnnie Dixon from Ohio State. I don’t see the Cardinals very active in this area, but if a vet comes free at the end of training camp, they will NOT hesitate to improve this squad.

TE: The Cardinals have 6 TE’s signed currently but with the amount they use them, I’m not sure why. TE Maxx Williams is slotted as the starter with TE Darrell Daniels spelling him. Two rookies in TE Ryan Becker and TE Parker Houston will fight for a spot on the team on special teams or even the practice squad. I just don’t see a ton of talent here like the rest of the NFL and perhaps this is why the Cardinals have such problems covering a TE. S Isaiah Simmons should solve that problem but it would be nice to have someone worthy across from him to work against!

K: PK Zane Gonzalez is the only K in camp. So, there you go!

The Cardinals got busy in the draft with defense as well and we’ll discuss them next month in July.

Go NFL and COVID-19 please just head to Mars. Thank you!

Go Cardinals!

End.
