Los Angeles Chargers April Scouting Report
Brad Willis
4/20/2020

With coronavirus rampant and many of us locked down for safety reasons, who knows if the 2020 season will start on time. But it’s likely they’ll play, albeit with some limitations, so let’s take a look at the Chargers current status and needs, by position.

QB: With QB Philip Rivers gone, the Bolts need a quarterback, badly. They believe that QB Tyrod Taylor is an NFL caliber quarterback. Personally, I don’t think so. From what I’ve seen QB Easton Stick may have starting potential, but not yet. It’s clear to me that the Chargers need a quarterback, even if they don’t know it themselves.

RB: As you likely know, RB Melvin Gordon is also gone. That leaves RB Austin Ekeler as their clear starter, and he has the potential to post huge numbers for the team. RB Justin Jackson will be their #2 back and he’s shown flashes of being very good. While they aren’t in bad shape at the position, I think the team could use another solid option, preferably with veteran experience.

WR: While WR Keenan Allen and WR Mike Williams are very good, the team is a bit think beyond those two players. Look for the team to add at least 1-2 solid receivers, possibly via the draft.

TE: Importantly, TE Hunter Henry has been re-signed. In my view, Henry is one of the NFL’s top tight ends, but he does have a history of injury. The Chargers recently signed TE Donald Parham, Jr., a lanky 6-8, 240 lb tight end out of the XFL. Parham is known for his receiving skills and could have some value in the event of an injury to Hunter, or during passing downs with 2 TEs. However, if Henry is healthy, he likely has limited value.

PK: Presumably, PK Michael Badgley will be back. Badgley is solid but not sure what kind of scoring the team will do with Taylor guiding the offense.

DEF: The Chargers have resigned CB Michael Davis, who was possibly underrated. The Bolts need help on the defensive line, particularly at nose and at the defensive tackle positions. The Chargers have lost several linebackers to free agency. While LB Drue Tranquill was surprisingly good, this is now a weak spot for the team. Expect the Bolts to take several linebackers in the 2020 draft

End.
