Houston Texans March Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
3/30/2020

With $35,886 MM cap cash available the Texans have more room to sign FAs than most other teams. Their two big contracts coming up are OT Laremy Tunsil and QB Deshaun Watson. They may want to complete these signings this year. Clearly the WR DeAndre Hopkins and DL Jadeveon Clowney trades were cap clearing moves preparing the way for those signings.

The big question in Houston and the NFL is if there will be games played this year. I believe the health scare will lead to a shortened season. I would not be surprised if the schedule was shortened to November-December-January reflecting division and conference games only.

The Texans feel the return of OT Laremy Tunsil, C Nick Martin, OG Max Scharping, OT Tytus Howard and C-G Greg Mancz is a strength going into the next season. They have signed offensive line back-ups, but I believe are still looking for a starting RG. That should be findable.

The Texans needed to run the ball when they were up 24-0 in KC during the play-offs. It would have made all the difference in the world. Where is that big back? Neither RB Carlos Hyde (gone via freee agency for now) nor RB Duke Johnson fit that description. Enter RB David Johnson. He is a big back who will have an opportunity to road grader behind that offensive line described above. Can he do it?

Will playmaker WR Will Fuller be able to dominate as a number one? Sure, but for how many games? Can WR Kenny Stills stay healthy? Have the Texans found their slot receiver in FA WR Randle Cobb? What will the TEs role be this season? Mostly receiving or blocking? Will second year TE Kahale Warring emerge?

DT D.J. Reader was lost in free agency exactly when the Texans are trying to add talent to a ‘SUSPECT’ DL. Last year’s defense play in the play-off loss to the Chiefs says it all.

The Texans don’t have enough draft choices for a number one receiver talent and to cure the D. Stay tuned.

End.
