Miami Dolphins February Scouting Report
David Vohs
2/27/2020

The Miami Dolphins are really looking forward to this year’s draft. They have collected extra picks in this year’s draft to get younger and better in the off season. The Dolphins have the fifth overall pick, the 18th overall pick from the Steelers after trading CB Minkah Fitzpatrick and they have Houston’s 2020 and 2021 First Round picks which will be #26 this year. In the second round, the Dolphins have their own second round pick (#5) and have the Saint’s second round pick. In the third round, the Dolphins have their pick and perhaps a compensatory pick for JaWuan James. No picks in the 4th round for the Dolphins as well as 2 picks in the 5th and 4 picks in the 6th and 7th Round. Lots of ammo to move around!

Let’s look at the current team:

QB: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is the best QB they have on the Dolphins team right now. Most experts are saying the Dolphins should draft QB Tua Tagovailoa from Alabama. Some are saying the Dolphins could make a surprise move and go up to #1 and select Tua or QB Joe Burrow. Who knows?! QB Josh Rosen could be a good cheap backup, but clearly needs more work. This position needs immediate attention.

RB: Oh wow, even a bigger mess! With the #18 or #26 pick the Dolphins could add an amazing talent or even wait until the second round pick. RB Kenyan Drake is a Free Agent, but they won’t be bringing him back. RB Mark Walton was released. This left RB Kalen Ballage to take the reigns. That did NOT happen. RB Patrick Laird and RB Myles Gaskin flashed a little, but I see them taking a tailback earlier than later in the draft.

WR: This is probably the best unit on the Dolphins, but with such a deep draft this year, the Dolphins will add some talent via the draft at WR. WR DaVante Parker and WR Preston Williams (injured) are the best of the bunch. WR Albert Wilson, WR Allen Hurns and WR Jakeem Grant are very good role players. If they sign some free agents after the draft or draft someone late in the draft, they may have issues making the team.

TE: TE Mike Gesicki has developed into a solid young, productive player. No real worries here.

So, this team really needs the following:

Quarterback, Offensive Line, Edge Rusher, Running Back, Cornerbacks, & Defensive Ends.

Next month we will look at the draft in much more detail!

End.
