Houston Texans Early August Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
8/16/2019

QB AJ McCarronwill not see any action in preseason due to a busted thumb courteous of Packerland.QB Deshaun Watsonis taking all the significant camp reps.

More pessimism concerning the OL. C Nick Martin and back-upC-G Greg Manczare nursing injuries. RG Zach Fultonis starting at C. LT Matt Kalilis having such a terrible camp that the media is trying to trade DE Jadeveon Clowney for a LT. RookieLT Titus Howardis settling in at LG with rookie RT Max Scharping doing the same at RG. WillRT Seantrel Hendersonlast?Veterans G Martinas Rankin, LG Senio Kelemeteare fading. I expect LT Julie’n Davenportor LT Roderick Johnsonto become the starting LT soon. Not a good situation right now.

Do the Texans have any worthy fantasy RBs? RB D’onta Foremanwas cut. CanRB Lamar Millerproduce behind this OL? The Texans traded forRB Duke Johnson. Undrafted FA RB Damarea Crockett has shown promise. He’s a big guy who can get you a short yard. If you absolutely need 8" he’s your guy. Can’t stop a LB though.

WR Will FullerandWR DeAndre Hopkins are gold withWR Keke Couteeback in the soaking tub. Honestly, he may be too small to stay healthy in the pros.Undrafted FAsWR Johnnie DixonandWR Tyron Johnson have been a tale of two cities. Dixon has talent but at best is headed for the practice squad. I like Johnson. I’ve seen moves he’s made that reminds me of WR Randy Moss! Take a flyer on him in your league.

I believe this will be a pass heavy TE O. Look for TE Jordon Thomas and TE Jordon Akins to make big catches but they’ll also have to block to compensate for a weak OL. I don’t see any TE lighting it up fantasy-wise. They may carry as many as four TEs.

WR DeAndre Carter seems to be their best hope for the return game. Fuller and Coutee are their best punt and kick-off returnersbut both are busy.

The front seven is solid but there is a need for more CBs in the secondary. Not a word from DE Jadeveon Clowney. He’s playing under the franchise tag this year. Will they trade him for a LT when he signs his franchise tag contract?

With 42MM of cap cash available the Texans could still do some things this summer. 49 MM if they cut Kalil before the season.

End.
