Arizona Cardinals Early August Scouting Report
David Vohs
8/14/2019

The Arizona Cardinals were successful in showing off their new starting QB "K1" ….. QB Kyler Murray. QB Kyler Murray demonstrated a great arm, fast legs, good decisions, and only hung WR Larry Fitzgerald out to dry once (please do not do that again!). The Cardinals beat the Chargers by a score of 17-13.

QB: QB Kyler Murray went 6 for 7 for 44 yards and used his legs to avoid sacks and ended up with a short game full of confidence and wanted to go back into the game after the first series. They would not let him. Let’s hope his playing in the pre-season is not long. We need him for the full season! QB Brett Huntley did a very inspiring job as the backup and should win theback-up job pretty easily.

RB: RB David Johnson should have a better season with more lanes open and more pass catching opportunities. RB Chase Edmonds will be his primary back-up in this offense and could be a pass catching fiend as well. We’ll find out in pre-season 3 and 4 who will be the 3rd RB on the bench.

WR: This is becoming an interesting race to see who makes the roster. WR Hakeem Butler dropped an easy pass and he needs to catch the ball to make the big leagues. WR Larry Fitzgerald, well, you know, no issues there. WR Andy Isabella should make the team. WR Christian Kirk is the clear #2 WR on this team as long as he can get healthy. WR KeeSean Johnson has a chance to impress and make this team. WR Pharoh Cooper and WR Damiere Byrd need to step up and show something in pre-season. WR A.J. Richardson, WR Kevin White, WR Chad Williams are all on the bubble and need to step up. I’d say the Cardinals will keep 6-7 WRs on the roster. So WR Larry Fitzgerald (in), WR Christian Kirk (in), WR Andy Isabella (in), WR Trent Sherfield (probably in), WR Hakeem Butler (probably in – must catch the passes). That makes 5. So some of the bubble people must step up or some receivers will be brought in as they are cut across the league. Coach Kliff Kingsbury will make sure the people on the roster can catch the ball. There was rumor that WR Michael Crabtree was going to sign with the Cardinals but apparently they could not reach a deal. Perhaps later in the pre-season.

TE: I hope the Cardinals actually use the TE this year. TE Charles Clay was brought in to be a pass catching TE. TE Ricky Seals-Jones should be a matchup nightmare in this offense. TE Maxx Williams and TE Darrell Daniels have NFL experience should one of the others go down. Rookie TE Drew Belcher hopefully can make the practice squad. Rookie TE Caleb Wilson was QB Josh Rosen’s TE at UCLA. He has a shot at the practice squad as well.

K: K Zane Gonzales might face some competition in the pre-season, but right now he is not. Could be a surprise K on fantasy rosters.

D/ST: I have a feeling the Cardinals are not done bringing in talent. More to come later in the pre-season.

The Cardinals take on the Raiders in Phoenix Thursday Night 8/15/2019. More after!

Go Cardinals!

End.
