Arizona Cardinals July Scouting Report
David Vohs
7/30/2019

Well camp Kingsbury has officially begun in 2019! Hooray! This report will focus not on the 53 man roster but perhaps some philosophies of what is upcoming and things to look for in camp and pre-season. Next report in early August will focus on who will make the team and fantasy impacts.

QB Kyler Murray the overall #1 draft pick (we will talk about those later) is looking sharp in early practices and WR Larry Fitzgerald says Murray has full command of the offense already. That is promising! I sat in the stand for 7 of 8 games last year and watched an offense that could NOT get out of its own way. RB David Johnson had zero room to run and was not used in the passing game at all. The offense barely made 150 yards a game and QB Josh Rosen while showing SOME improvement really wasn’t making the correct decisions. 2018 should have been better, but it was agonizingly horrible to watch the offense. In 2019, that should not be a problem. The games should be higher scoring and more offense and possessions by each offense! That’s my hope. Cardinal fantasy players should by far more effective this year. Backing up QB Kyler Murray I believe will be QB Brett Hundley who has some decent experience and should be a very capable backup should QB Kyler Murray have to miss any action.

The offense should have 5 WR on the field most of the time. RB David Johnson can be used as another receiver so QB Kyler Murray should have plenty of targets. This should also give RB David Johnson much more room to move.

I want to see how the offensive line can come together. Last year they were horrible chich didn’t help QB Josh Rosen (now in Miami) and the offense. Teams stacked the box last season not allowing the Cardinal rushing game to get going. The running game should be better this year.

On the defensive side, the Cardinals will lose CB Patrick Peterson for the first 6 games. That is a huge blow. For years, it has been a chore for GM Steve Keim to find a great CB across from CB Patrick Peterson. I have touted that we should go draft the best CB in the draft available for years.

Let’s look at the first round picks the last few years….

2011 – CB Patrick Peterson - Great pick. Everyone knew it had to happen. If we had kept DRC (CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) we would have had a nice 1-2 punch. QB Kevin Kolb? Really? (Note: I had 4 DRC jerseys and didn’t bother to get a Kolb jersey). Yes, I’m bitter!

2012 – WR Michael Floyd. Bust! Never showed his true potential and never stayed sober!

2013 – OG Jonathan Cooper - He’s great… and had his best years with the Dallas Cowboys OOPS! Bust!

2014 – S DeoneBucannon. I loved this pick and he should still be on this team!! Good pick but allowed to leave - BUST

2015 – OT D.J Humphries – Still on the team and should be a stalwart on the offensive line. Good!

2016 – DT Robert Nkemdiche – a complete waste. Now I thought it was a good pick at the time, but wow, was I wrong

2017 – ILB Haason Reddick – the brain trust drafted a pass rusher and wanted to move him inside. Once again, that’s a bad thing! So far: BUST.

2018 – QB Josh Rosen – traded for a third round pick AND had to use the #1 pick in 2019 on a QB. Let’s hope QB Kyler Murray sticks and has QB Russell Wilson success.

By the way, in 2004 the Cardinals drafted future HOF WR Larry Fitzgerald. SUCCESS for the ages!

This year, the offense should improve and the defense will take a step back until P2 (CB Patrick Peterson) returns from his suspension. The defensive front 7 will have to apply a lot of pressure on opposing QBs to assist the Cardinal backfield until the talent comes back week 7 and some of the younger players get their feet wet.

If the offense can get their act together, look for some high scoring games early in the season and look for the defense to improve but take great strides once everyone is back and healthy. Until then, the offense needs to be electric, move the field and have good efficiency in the Redzone.

More next time and look for position battles to make the team and starting fantasy predictions.

Go Cardinals!

End.
