Houston Texans July Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
7/24/2019

Despite July being a slow NFL news month there is interesting pre-camp drama.

QB Deshaun Watson has taken full advantage of his healthy off season. He understands the playbook and the system. Relationships between him and his receivers are solid. Do we have any reason to believe that back up QB AJ McCarron is worth handcuff status? We’ll see plenty of him in the preseason.

Nothing but pessimism from the local press concerning the OL. C Nick Martin and RG Zach Fulton are considered mediocre butacknowledgedasstarters. No one else is even considered mediocre! I expect LT Julie’n Davenport, LT Matt Kalil and rookie LT Titus Howard in the mix on the left side with RT Seantrel Henderson and rookie RT Max Scharping working the right side by the end of camp.Veterans G Martinas Rankin, LG Senio Kelemete and C-G Greg Mancz are in the mix at RG. Veteran FA TE Darren Fells was signed to improve the blocking. Hoping something jells by September…or maybe October.

Do the Texans have any worthy fantasy RBs? I would take a chance on third year RB D’onta Foreman. Word is that he’s in shape and ready to go. RB Lamar Miller is still around and is worthy as a back-up. The Texans did not draft a RB but signed a few undrafted FAs. I’ll be watching them.

WR Will Fuller, WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Keke Coutee are all healthy. Each would be a great addition to your fantasy team. Back-ups include undrafted WR Johnnie Dixon and WR Tyron Johnson. They will compete with second year WR Vyncint Smithwho won a roster spot last year. I believe this will be a pass heavyto TEs O. Look for TE Jordon Thomas and TE Jordon Akins to make big contributions.

The front seven is solid but there is a giant concern in the secondary. They couldn’t stop anyone by the end of last year. Did they pick up enough help in the off season to bolster that secondary? This will be an area to watch during camp. Big question markconcerning the way the team is handling DE Jadeveon Clowney. He’s playing under the franchise tag this year. Are the coaches trying to motivate him?

With 42MM of cap cash available the Texans could add veteran FA talent this summer.

End.
