Houston Texans June Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
6/17/2019

"That has to be a position of strength, even if it’s not one player, but multiple players doing different roles, the tight end position is a big part of our offense and those guys are going to have to do a great job for us." says QB Tom Brady. The Texans have adopted that policy for the 2019 season. TE Kahale Warring, the next TE Travis Kelce, was draftedin the third round last April.Veteran FA TE Darren Fellswas signed to improve the blocking. TE Jordon Thomas and TE Jordon Akinsare second year players who will become anintegral part of this year’s O. Especially Thomas; really impressed in this month’s OTAs.

Hottest rumor here is that the Texans have called about the availability of LT Trent Williams. VeteranLT Matt Kaliland rookieLT Titus Howard are penciled in at that spot for now. RT Seantrel Henderson and RT Max Scharping are competing on the other side. Williams has been banged up in recent years but even a 12 game contribution would be a difference-maker. The Texans are without a General Manager at this point so the probabilityof Williams showing up is only so-so to bleak. The team won’t know where the OL isat until training camp.

Only news about RBs from mini-camp is that RB D’onta Foreman is in the best shape of his short career. RB Lamar Miller is running first string. Look for the team to try to find someone in training camp to emerge as the third back. So far many have been called but none have been chosen.

WR Will Fuller, WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Keke Coutee are the expected starters even with Fuller and Coutee being injury suspects. The Texans are high on undrafted WR Johnnie Dixon. He’s a 4.4 football guy who seems to fit in.They also signed undrafted FA WR Tyron Johnson out of Oklahoma. Second year WR Vyncint Smith is the early favorite for that fourth spot. We’ll see in training camp.

DE Jadeveon Clowney, DE J.J. Watt and NT DJ Readerare the heavies of the front seven. Clowney is going through the franchise tag two step now so who knows how that will end up.Veteran FA CB Bradley Roby and newly drafted CB Lonnie Johnson Jr. have been dealing with soft tissue injuries since day one; they are on theinjury suspects list. The D just couldn’t stop anyone at the end of the season last year.Lots of opportunities for someone to step up in the secondary.

With 42MM of cap cash available the Texans could add veteran FA talent this summer. They will need to just that.
End.
