Houston Texans May Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
5/3/2019

The Texans didn’t draft TE T.J. Hockenson, but did pick up TE Kahale Warring in the third round.Veteran FA TE Darren Fellswas signed to improve the blocking. TE Jordon Thomas and TE Jordon Akins are second year players who had interesting rookie seasons. Tight end play could become a larger part of the Texans 2019 offense.

For that to happen, the fresh offensive tackle talent that was drafted in the first and second rounds needs to produce. Both selections have talent but when will they be able to play? Veterans LT Matt Kalil and RT Seantrel Henderson will compete with rookies LT Titus Howard and RT Max Scharping. The offensive line has been terrible the last couple of years. You don’t go from terrible to terrific overnight.

RB Duke Johnson is still a Brown. The rumor that he’d become a Texan via a Draft Day trade didn’t pan out. Can rookie FA RB Karan Higdon stick as the third RB behind RB Lamar Miller and RB D’onta Foreman? His Michigan position coach, Jay Harbaugh, says he’ll do just that. The Texans also drafted a fullback; hard to imagine a fullback getting much work in this O.

WR Will Fuller,WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Keke Coutee are the expected starters but Fuller and Coutee are injury suspects. Sure need to find some effective back-ups.The Texans did not draft a WR.Rumor is that they paid an undrafted FA $ 50,000 bonus to sign up! Despite chronic knee injuries (arthritis in one, tendinitis in the other) WR Johnnie Dixon managed to catch the eyes of pro scouts and at least one team was willing to belly up to the bar. He’s a 4.4 football player, not a track guy.

In 2018 undrafted FA special team players helped turn the worse special team squad in the NFL into a pretty good one. The Texans drafted 6-foot-2, 235-pound FB CullenGillaspia with hopes that he’ll be a STs contributor.

DE Jadeveon Clowney, DE J.J. Watt and the front seven is set. Or are they? Fifth round selection DE Charles Omenihu is expected to put heat on the quarterback from the middle. His rap is that he’s great one play then disappears on the next. The Texans hope playing between Clowney and Watt will help his development. In other words, quit screwing off. We’ll see. FA NT Javier Edwards will be given the opportunity to rotate withNT DJ Reader. Veteran FA CB Bradley Roby and newly drafted CB Lonnie Johnson Jr. hopefully will add talent to that secondary that failed in the clutch last year.

With plenty cap cash available the Texans will continue to add veteran FA talent through the spring and summer.

End.
