Houston Texans February Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
2/20/2019

With 78MM in cap cash available the Texans have room to maneuver during free agency. Sure need to add talent.

The OL returnsplayers like OLT Julie’n Davenport, C Nick Martin, OG Martinas Rankin and OL Greg Mancz. Ouch! An infusion of talent is desperately needed. With luck Davenport may be a serviceable swing tackle. Martin so far has been a disappointment. Mancz seems to be the best of this offensive line but they play him as a back-up C-G. Is it coaching or just a lack of talent? Either way the Texans MUST draft two tackles with their three picks in the first three rounds. They have enough guards and centers. If they want to hedge their bet is to sign a OT in FA; but they must bring in two young talented Ts.

RB Lamar Miller and RB D’onta Foreman return, but neither is an alpha back.In fact Foreman returning from arch surgery failed to get in shape and shamed himself with his late season poor play. The Texans could really use a RB. Would make all the difference in the world. Where is RB LeVeon Bell when you need him?

Will playmaker WR Will Fuller be able to last a full season? Sure would like to see that. Clearly WR DeAndre Hopkins is their one, but Fuller is a speed load that Ds can’t cover. Can WR Keke Coutee stay healthy and emerge at the slot? Can WR Vyncint Smith find consistency in his pass patterns? The Texans found dependable tight end play last year with two late round draft picks. Hopefully they will play well enough this year that will reference them by name during the season.

The D is loaded with safeties; FS Justin Reid, S Tyrann Mathieu, S Andre Halland, S Kareem Jackson make up a strong squad. CB Kevin Johnson and CB Aaron Colvin had very disappointing years in 2018. Injuries hurt them originally but as the season wore on they become SUSPECT. Last year’s leaky secondary from the corner killed the Texans late in the season. The team MUST draft a talented cornerback with one of their three picks in the first two rounds. DE Jadeveon Clowney, DE J.J. Watt and the front seven is set. That secondary is not.

Next month free agency then in April the Draft; this is the most exciting time of the season for people like us.

End.
