Kansas City Chiefs Late August Scouting Report
John Cooney
8/28/2018

Let’s get right into it as we steam toward opening day!

QB Pat Mahomes is going to be better than I anticipated. Yep, I underestimated his ability to absorb all that is being an NFL QB... a good one. He’s absorbing like a sponge. And Coach Reid once again has verified and validated his QB guru card.

For the record and to-date, Mahomes is 31 of 43 passing; that’s a sparkling 72.1% completion rate... OUTSTANDING!!! He’s delivering the ball at 8.5 yards per attempt (YPA) which translates to 367 yards in 43 throws. 2 TD, 1 INT and just 2 sacks.

WR Tyreek Hill is morphing into a PPR monster as well as a play-making machine. Mahomes is locked in on his fleet wideout. Can you imagine what Hill can do with 90-100 catches? LORD HAVE MERCY!

I thought WR Sammy Watkins would be a diluting element in Hill’s volume mix on offense, but that isn’t the case so far. Watkins looks like a situational deep target and the above-average stix-mover. He is also one heck of a decoy that opens even wider receiving ranges for TE Travis Kelce and Hill.

Did I say Mahomes was going to be better than expected? I think he’ll have to be as I now have real concerns about the offensive line’s run blocking effectiveness going forward.

The 3rd exhibition tilt is supposed to be the "dress rehearsal" for the season; if so, the ground game looks grounded. Versus the Bears, Kansas City RBs rushed 9 times for... TEN YARDS!!!

TEN YARDS!

Yes, RB Kareem Hunt recorded a 19-yard TD catch, but that was a gift from the Bears; busted coverage. The good thing on that play was Mahomes sniffed that broken play out immediately and calmly hit a wide... WIDE... open Hunt.

The longest runs of the day were by QBs Mahomes (9) and Chase Litton (8). Best any of the Chiefs’ RBs could muster was 3 yards and the proverbial cloud of dust.

FYI, the starting lineup featured 3 WRs (Hill, Watkins and Chris Conley), 1 TE (Kelce) but no fullback.

RB Kerwynn Williams is tops on KC in the pre-season with a muddy 2.9 YPC. ICK!

Rookie Chase Litton carries himself like a pro QB. He is far better mechanically at this level than in his college game cut-ups. Can’t get over the poise he displays and quality spin he puts on the football. Still, Chad Henne is the clear winner of the job behind Mahomes.

Tyreek Hill leads all AFC receivers in catches in the pre-season; 14.

After Hill, the next 4 leading pass-catchers for the Chiefs have been RB Kerwynn Williams (8) and TEs Alex Ellis (6), Travis Kelce (6), Jace Amaro (5).

If you are wondering, the 2nd leading WR for KC after Hill is NOT Sammy Watkins. He owns 1 haul for 15 yards. Gehrig Dieter and Demarcus Robinson each snared 4.

Fantasy folks best load up rosters with Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce; that’s where Mahomes is zeroing in on for a successful first-season of starts. Kareem Hunt def will be snagging a bunch as well.

ILB Reggie Ragland and Anthony Hitchens gave us a sampling of what will be coming in 2018, combining for 13 solo tackles in just a half of action. Hitchens had 7 stops and Ragland 6.

A scary revelation was the ease in which the Bears burned CB David Amerson. Amerson is missing a closing gear.

No sacks. And the one sack actually delivered ended up getting wiped out on a roughing the passer penalty. OLB (really?) Tanoh Kpassagnon just blew up former KC QB Chase Daniel, but launched in the process, so the sack was nullified.

Now, Coach Sutton, why is Tanoh Kpassagnon still buried at OLB behind Dee Ford, Frank Zombo and Breeland Speaks? You telling me at 6’7-290, "K-Pass" can’t be an effective 3-4 DE?

So, it looks like our QB is going to be OK. That rollercoaster ride I spoke about is still there, but now I’m feeling more thrills that chills. But now I am concerned about the rushing. We’ll see. Let’s get the full o-line back. "Doc" Duvernay-Tardif should be an upgrade when he returns from his head injury. But I worry about him as well. Looking at the way the defense is playing, the lack of a pass rush and the porous secondary, Mahomes and company may be passing to keep pace or catch up, which means passes-a-plenty. That’s fantasy football fun right there.

One more clean up game and we’re off to the 2018 regular season races.
